Carney will write a lobbying column for the weekly page, which will make its debut in two weeks. He also will continue his Friday op-ed column.
“Most reporters write about how much money lobbyists make and what great access they have,” said Stephen G. Smith, editor of The Washington Examiner. “Tim writes about how they affect, and sometimes distort, the legislative process.”
Carney comes to The Examiner from Eagle Publishing, where he succeeded Robert Novak as editor of the Evans-Novak Political Report and served as a book editor at Regnery Publishing. He is also the author of the 2006 book “Big Ripoff: How Big Business and Big Government Steal Your Money.”
“As readers of his Examiner column know, Tim uses documents, databases and good old shoe-leather reporting to follow the money, map relationships, and tot up costs and benefits,” Smith said.
Also joining the staff is Kiki Ryan, who has been working part time on the popular Yeas & Nays column since September. She replaces the departing Patrick Gavin as Jeff Dufour’s partner.
Before coming to The Examiner, Ryan spent six months as an editorial intern at CQ, worked for a Hollywood marketing firm and was a summer intern for Rep. Brad Sherman, D-Calif.
“Kiki is as comfortable on Capitol Hill as she is at Café Milano,” Smith said. “She and Jeff will give our readers fascinating glimpses of how this town works.”
At a time when many newspapers are retrenching, The Washington Examiner has been hiring journalists and strengthening its Web site.
The Washington Examiner is a daily newspaper owned by Clarity Media, headquartered in Denver, which also publishes The San Francisco Examiner and The Baltimore Examiner.
