Prince William seeing effects of immigrant crackdown

By: David Sherfinski
Examiner Staff Writer
December 4, 2008

Many illegal immigrants have left Prince William County or slid out of public view in the 17 months since the county’s high-profile crackdown on them was proposed.

Student enrollment in the public schools’ English as a Second Language program has dropped by several hundred students over the past year while increasing in surrounding jurisdictions, one sign that immigrants have left.

Fewer day laborers congregate outside the 7-Eleven on the corner of Route 1 and Prince William Parkway in Woodbridge. About 10 of them gathered on a Tuesday afternoon several weeks ago looking for work, to no avail.

Police drive past, paying little attention to the group. In March, police officers cruising the area would have had the right to stop and ask for the men’s residency status if the officers had reason to believe they were in the country illegally.

The county changed its law against illegal immigrants July 1, requiring police to question the residency status only of those arrested, though officers still retain discretion to inquire into immigration status before making an arrest.

But the change is little comfort to many Hispanics, immigration lawyer Ricky Malik said.

“I think people here maybe changed and adapted — who they trust,” said Malik, who has offices in Manassas and Takoma Park. “Basic things — they don’t want to go to the courthouse. They’re hesitant to walk into such buildings. There’s definitely a greater distrust of any authority.”

There are no statistics to prove that illegal immigrants have moved, but figures such as the ESOL data and anecdotes suggest the county’s crackdown, approved in October 2007, and the recession have prompted illegals to leave or at least not wander too far outside their homes.

“Immigrants aren’t just an isolated part of society,” Malik said, adding that some of his Virginia clients ask to meet him in Takoma Park. “If you wipe out every immigrant in Prince William, there are so many things that won’t get done. Manassas is almost a ghost town.”

Indeed, Victor Rincon, manager of Michael’s Restaurant — adjacent to the 7-Eleven on Route 1 — said the exodus of immigrants has practically decimated his business.

“My place has lost about 75 percent of the business,” he said. “We have lost nearly everything. There’s no immigrants anymore. They have gone to Maryland or another state.”

Still, the county jail continues to turn over illegal immigrant felons to federal authorities, although at a slower pace.

“Probably detainers have gone down a small amount in the last couple months,” said Col. Pete Meletis, superintendent of the county jail.

As of Nov. 30, the jail — which doubled its five-person staff after the county crackdown went into effect to handle the spike in arrests — had detained 1,353 illegal immigrants and federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement picked up 1,269 since July 2007.

Also contributing to the flight is the recession, immigration experts say.

“Immigrants are practical people,” said American University professor Alan Kraut, who specializes in immigration history. “When they see a economy that’s floundering, they tend to back off. Migration is always a calculated choice.

“Since housing construction has slowed to stopped” in the county, immigrants have left, Kraut said. “They haven’t been treated hospitably in [Prince William] — why should people want to be there?”

Residents are still grappling with the issue.
“Some people are spent on this issue, including supervisors,” said Elena Schlossberg of Haymarket. “I don’t think citizens know where to go at this point. Things like this don’t just go away.”

Rincon said he was “hopeful” that business would pick up, but didn’t think it would.

“I’ve been trying for the last three months to get rid of this place and get out,” he said. “Go to Arlington or something. I’m losing money. I just want to leave.”

Proof positive that 'ENFORCEMENT WORKS'. Illegal alien enablers constantly lobbies against this, but facts are inescapable. Other evidence that seem to pass by the local MSM; Mont Cnty has an additional 1,500 "unexpected" students this school year that it had to find monies for and its a sanctuary for illegals. HMMMM. Any coincidence.

We need the SAVE ACT and E-verify used for every business and NOT Amnesty. E-verify does not discriminate against RACE, Religion, SEX or physically capability only your Citizenship and your LEGAL right to be and work in United States. If we can stop Predatory business owners from hiring then the Illegal Aliens will not Stay and return to their native Countries. This ISSUE is not about RACE, but Governments Federal/State/LOCAL not doing their jobs, because big and small business owners want cheap workers and no labor laws to bother with. Its called GREED! The only RACISTS are the single RACE agenda GROUPS like La RAZA, Mecha, Aztlan and ETC....Whose main goal is take our Western States back to Mexico. Liberals and Conservatives need to take some pride in our Country and protect it from all invading nations citizens and corporate greed. Please, NO IMMIGRANT BASHING or HATE Crimes. HATE only feeds the single RACE agenda groups for Open Borders and the Media.

“I think people here maybe changed and adapted — who they trust,” What people? Illegals? Good! Let them adapt themselves into getting legal status. Then, they have nothing to worry about.

Mr. Rincon is apparently such a bad businessman that he can only build a successful business on the back of people who are breaking the law. Perhaps if he tried appealing to citizens and legal residents, he'd do better.

We had economic prosperity & our home values were up and life was good. Now it's crud. I planned to use my HELOC to fund my kid's college education but now because of all the foreclosures in the neighborhood I can not. My wife is distraught and I am depressed. I never thought it would turn out like this. In hindsight, I wish Prince William County had not undertaken this policy against the Hispanics. Then maybe our real estate markets would be more like Loudoun or Fairfax and our homes would not have lost so much value.

We need legal immigrants like the Somalis working in Kansas or the Iraqis

NO "comprehensive reform" Amnesty

Dec 5, 2008

Enforcement works and is the humane and cost-effective way to solve the illegal immigration problem. And with 10 million Americans out of work, now is NOT the time for any form of amnesty ("pathways to citizenship") etc. Please get involved. Join NumbersUSA & call your Reps. More enforcement and no amnesty.

This would have never happened in Mexico,,why,,because no one is allowed to be there illegally in the first place. Sounds like Va. has a plan,,why not play follow the leader?. My guess is that they will also see a drop in unpaid hospital bills, crime and people demanding free Govt. (Tax dollars THEY never paid) hand outs too. You go VA.

You can't have it both ways people! Tax payers get hit with the costs of illegal aliens, then someone tries to enforce current laws, and another complains about "I've lost business". The fact remains, illegal alien, means someone who does not belong here and broke our laws to start with. You think illegals have compassion for those who have lost their jobs to them, or your fellow citizen that has been vicitimized by them? I'm sick and tired of these sob stories about illegals.

I thought it was impossible to kick them out. Weren't we told that the only solution is to give these criminals citizenship as a reward? Breaking the law as your first act in the USA is just bad form.

It's about time that American citizens are standing up for LEGAL immigration. We need this policy in every state, county and locality!!! I can't believe those people who are protecting these ILLEGAL immigrants. These Mexicans and other ILLEGAL immigrants are breaking the law and should be deported to whatever country they came from. I still can't believe nearly 7 years after 9/11 happened, the Southern and Northern borders and still WIDE OPEN with limited border patrol and no military. We should be using our military on the border, not in Iraq and Afghanistan where those people do not want to make their country safer!!!

To the anonymous person who posted "Bunch of Bigots", you are out of line. These people, no matter what country they are from, are illegal aliens. You are part of the problem, not the solution. You are the bigot in that you hate America so much you elect people to destroy it from within. You are the typical coward blogger who hides behind his anonymous computer postings, yet will cower in public because you lack courage to confront that which is wrong. Take you liberal rear to France or Canade because REAL AMERICANS are tired of you wimps who try to destroy and give away America. Funny how my hispanic friends and family members don't think of me as a bigot, like you claim, but as a great American trying to keep my country great.

Have any of these pro-illegal alien American citizens ever lived in the U.S. without illegal aliens? It was a dream! A paradise in most states without them. Now we have a nightmare.!

The fact is we are all better off if legal immigrants are here and illegals are not. The problem of millions of illegals can be solved one community at a time. When the "sanctuary cities" come with their hand out because of the cost of caring for the illegals and the massive increase in crime we should just smile and say "I told you so". Sheriff Joe Arpaio of Maricopa County Arizona has been so successful in his crackdown of illegals the crime rate has dropped.Enforcement and community standards have been our friends.

Someone should do an article on how crime has also dramatically decreased in the area.

Many AMericans are so clueless to what illegal immigration is really about that its funny if it weren't so tragic. Americans are no bailing out the rich, on Wall Street, they are paying to finance the stay of illegal aliens by the millions, and they are seeing their money by the billions flying off to Mexico, the tenth richest nation in the world, all the while that they are losing jobs left and right in their own nation. How stupid and clueless can a citizenry be??

When illegals come into a area, they tend to take over by sheer numbers, the business areas and other places . This in turn causes the local folks to go to other places. Then when they leave or stop coming out, then the business and others suffer and want to complain. Sad isn't it??

I live in Phoenix, AZ, and trust me when I say this..We have been invaded. You guys in VA have NO CLUE how serious this is to the future of this country. We are on the verge of losing the U.S.A. as we know it and turning it over to open border racists and corrupt politicians like Hussein Obama, Mark Warner, and Tim Kaine... The problem is that our elected officials are bought and paid for by racist and corrupt lobbyists and special interest groups...you, me, jack, and jane don't get politicians reelected..the donations they receive from special interests and lobbyists get them elected..he who has the most money wins..in America, that is a simple fact.. Trust me, you can never stop fighting..take to the streets, protest businesses that hire illegals, protest racist groups like La Raza and other Mexican hate groups...If you let them win, we become Mexico..Just ask California how it's working out for them??

Bobby

Dec 6, 2008

Please read Vans post. He absolutely knows what he's talking about. This nation is being betrayed into third world status and Americans are going to find themselves, out in the streets broke, because our taxes will be so high serving third world immigration. DON'T SOME OF YOU IDIOTS GET IT!!!??? WE ARE BEING BETRAYED BY POLITICIANS, DEMOCRAT AND REPUBLICAN.
