Police arrive too late to save frantic caller

The man accused of fatally stabbing his ex-girlfriend inside her apartment as police desperately raced to save her had escaped from the D.C. Department of Corrections last month, authorities said.

U.S. marshals looking for fugitive Roderick Ridley got a frantic phone call from Tiffany Gates saying Ridley was trying to get into her apartment building on the 3900 block of D Street SE, said Robert Fernandez, commander of the Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force of the U.S. Marshall.

Gates, 33, was frightened. Last August, Ridley, 31, had allegedly set her fourth-story apartment on fire and the boyfriend had to be rescued by D.C. firefighters after he became overcome by the smoke, fire officials said. Ridley was later charged with arson and sent to jail for two months. A judge released him to a halfway house, but after nine days he walked away and never returned. An escape warrant was issued for Ridley on Oct. 30.

Now, Ridley was outside Gates’ building.

U.S. marshals rushed to the building, but by the time they got there D.C. police had already been on the scene and Ridley had disappeared, said U.S. marshal commander Robert Fernandez, commander of the Capital Area Fugitive Task Force.

The marshals decided to stake out the apartment in case Ridley returned. As the unit was setting up surveillance, the Marshals received another frantic call from Gates. Ridley was now outside her door, she said.

Marshals ran to the building but had difficulty getting into the complex, Fernandez said. By the time police made it upstairs to Gates’ apartment, it was too late. Her front door was open. Gates was on the ground, drenched in blood. Ridley was nowhere in sight.

Gates was taken to a hospital, where she died of stab wounds.

D.C. police cordoned off the building and conducted an apartment-by-apartment search. They captured Ridley in a vacant unit on the bottom floor, hiding in the cabinets, Fernandez said. Ridley was charged with second-degree murder.

D.C. corrections officials could not be reached for comment Sunday.

I am a concern resident that lives in an apartment building where my neighbors constantly fight. The problem is, once you call the polic, you have to come downstairs and open the door. This freightens me and stops me from call becuase I have to come outside of my apartment. The area police at one time had a key, I don't know what happened but it needs to be updated. I think the police that has a certain area should have a key to all apartment buildings. If this was done then maybe she would have been saved.

It is a shame that he only received 2 months jail time for setting her apartment on fire. Domestic violence has been a problem with that man for a while and police have records of some incidents and for him to be set free to a halfway house is rediculous. Those places are not as secured as they should be.

Too bad there's a handgun ban in D.C. She might have been able to defend herself.

What happened to the LAW? When you are a victim of a violent relationship and they get arrested you are supposed to be made aware of their release date from jail. Why didn't the police go straight to her instead of looking for him first. If they had went to her first she would still be here today.SHAME:Once again a failure on the behalf of the judicial system.

Another life lost because of bumbling, overpaid, moronic storm troopers of a petty bureaucratic agency when works outside of its Constitutional mandate. It is over maned and over budgeted. Usually when these federal thugs kill someone they use the standard police boiler plate excuse of someone starting the engine of their car so the marshall shots them to death and says the victim tried to run them over, but in this case the poor woman dies because she wastes her time calling marshalls instead of a competent police force. It's a shame. Well, no one will ever bother her again.

I'm so overwhelmed right now with the charge of this murder I have read in the Post. This young man has been charged with Second Degree Murder. SECOND? How do you plan, for months on how you will murder someone and get SECOND anything! Our Nation has to do better. MUCH! An officer of the law, I don't care what branch, SAT and waited for back up. WAITED? hearing this girl CRYING for her life. Her MOTHER is a dear friend and colleague of mine, and I pray for her healing day and nite because she is a MOTHER who has always PARENTED her child. But when a MOTHER parents, SHE SHOULD NOT HAVE TO READ ABOUT SUCH INCOMPETENCE that cost her CHILD her life at 33. We can be angry, but this MUST BE FIXED.

OK here is where the death penalty needs to be enforced!!! I am so overwhelmed that I cant get my words straight but I pray for the family of this young lady and I am tyring to find a way to warn my teenage daughter about these types of situations. How do you prepare them when they know everything. This young man was sick and once he was unconscience (POLICE)they should have KEPT HIM especially if she had numerous complaint in the system against him.

Tiffany and I hung out a few times back in the day... her mother and my mother are extremly close. I went to the funeral today and I can honestly say that my heart hurts! Although it's been a long while since I've seen or even talked to Tiffany, I can honestly say that she was a beautiful woman... on the inside and out! And it makes me angry every time that I think about what happened to her. What is going on with our black men!?!?!? Any man... of any race... that puts his hands on a woman for ANY reason, is a straight up PUNK and I hope he burns in hell for what he's done! MY... HEART... HURTS!!! R.I.P. TIFFANY S. GATES
