Secret Service told off-duty cops not to bring guns to game

The Secret Service ordered off-duty city cops to check their weapons or stay home from a pro basketball game President Barack Obama was attending, an internal memo obtained by The Examiner shows.

The president saw the Washington Wizards pound his beloved Bulls on Feb. 27. Before the game, a circular went out to D.C. police officers, telling them that they weren’t welcome if they were bringing their weapons.

“They [the Secret Service] have informed the Metropolitan Police Department and neighboring police agencies that off-duty members attending the game will NOT be allowed to carry firearms into the arena,” the memo states. “As such, members attending the game in an off-duty capacity and armed will be denied entry.”

It’s not clear how many officers were affected by the order. But is has stirred up tensions between the local police and the Secret Service. The two agencies have often clashed over local motorcades, which eat up thousands of hours of police overtime without federal reimbursement.

The order is an insult to rank-and-file officers, police union chairman Kris Baumann told The Examiner.

“If the Secret Service, despite their less-than-sterling reputation, believe we’re not professional enough, OK. But we spend thousands of dollars to support the Secret Service. The Secret Service has neither the resources or the skill level to do the job,” Baumann said.

Officers are required to carry their guns, badges and identification at all times, with exceptions for religious events, participating in an athletic event or for some social occasions. Stripping their weapons leaves them vulnerable to violent criminals, Baumann said.
According to the National Law Enforcement Museum, at least seven off-duty D.C. police officers have been killed in the department’s history. Only New York (18) and Cleveland (nine) have had more off-duty officers slain.

Secret Service spokesman Ed Donovan said the request was routine and that the agency made similar such requests whenever the president went to a public venue.

“The issue for us is, off-duty officers don’t know what our security plan is,” he said. “We don’t want a lot of people pulling guns who aren’t identifiable as police officers.”

Police departments sometimes have secure lockers brought into public venues when their off-duty cops are asked to check their weapons, Donovan said. According to the February police memo, “there will be no facilities to secure weapons during the game.”

Sounds to me like the Secret Service thinks they can handle the President all by themselves. But, I and about 3000 (if not more) other Police Officer's know better. Let the men (women) in the suits keep track of the President without the help of local Police. We are the ones putting our lives on the line. When was the last time a Secret Service Agent was shot at, without a MPD Officer taking the brunt of the attack. Let the Secret Service handle the traffic posts and the movements. They need to show some respect to the Officer's who really put in work in the Nations Capitol. This is not about taking a gun to a game, it's about the lack of respect shown to local Police. I would not feel safe even if the Secret Service offered me an armed escort to my car after the game. What do they know about crime in DC? Let me answer that, nothing!!

I would support the local police. Let them carry their guns or let President stay home. Why does obam dislike middle class hardworking taxpayers. Doesn't bother him to put the local cops lives at stake. Stay home obam

When I am walking around at night I like the idea that there are plenty of DC cops off duty who are able to protect me if needed, and it's not a rare occurrence that they do so. Why take that protection away from the regular people? Off duty cops are not going to pull their guns in any manner that appears threatening to the President. They will only pull guns if they are helping defend themselves or another person, and that is not protection we should give up just because the President lives here too.

I agree with the Secret Service, 100%. The are tasked with protecting the POTUS and that's that. If local law enforcement do not agree with their tactics, who cares? As long as they adhere to them, that's all that really matters.

I can only "HOPE" that Adrian is not in need of protection from these off-duty officers! Get real! What is the danger in having these officers abide by the rules that are in place in every other case? I would say it's more of a power/importance play on the part of the SS!

This is a non story. Big Deal.

Was this the case with W, too? Probably. Did the Examiner do a story on that? Probably not.

There is a law that states retired police officers can carry their guns anywhere they want in public. I didn't know the Secret Service could over ride a law.

History will reflect that at least 3 DC Police Officers have lost their lives protecting the President. Please do not forget the Officer's who were shot protecting the late President Reagan.

To Bob: Yes, in public. Inside Verizon Center is private property. Also this is such a non story, MPD had an on site armorer and stored weapons for any officers, MPD or not that showed up with their weapons. Why report now, it was over six weeks ago and they've done this at RFK and Nationals before.

Rauol - Apparently the police and Harry Jaffe think it is a story, and if it has happened before that makes it that much worse. By disarming cops, Secret Service makes D.C. less safe Harry Jaffe April 5, 2009

No big deal

What's the fuss about? I have been in law enforcement for over 20 years, Being off duty and leaving my service weapon at home not only protects me but others at a game where the SS may take action. I wouldnt want to take out my off duty gun in a game to result injuried by SS for not knowing who I am. Let them do their job and for the rest, stop the fuss and enjoy the game.. that was the idea behind going to see the games.

I GUESS AT THE NEXT INAUGURATION ALL THE (ARMED) OFFICERS, OUT OF STATE AND LOCAL, ALONG THE PARADE ROUTE SHOULD CHECK THEIR WEAPONS. IF I'M NOT MISTAKEN, WHEN PRESIDENT REAGAN WAS SHOT AT THE WASHINGTON HILTON, TWO DC POLICE OFFICERS WRESTLED JOHN HINCKLEY TO THE GROUND AND A THIRD SUFFERED A GUNSHOT WOUND TO THE BACK OF THE HEAD. BUT I UNDERSTAND, NOBODY ACTUALLY WANTS OR NEEDS THE POLICE AROUND UNITL THEY WANT OR NEED THEM. WHEN YOU GO TO A REDSKINS GAME, OFFICIALS AT THE STADIUM PLACE A BAND ON YOUR WRIST IDENTIFYING YOU AS LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICER. JUST SOMETING TO CONSIDER.

Think about it

Apr 13, 2009

Would you expect to carry your gun, in an off duty capacity, if you were on a white house tour? I'd hope not (you'd be an idiot if you think you could). So you shouldn't expect to carry off duty when you are anywhere the president is because no matter where the president is the security protocol is the same level as if he was at the white house.
