Sex scandal could threaten Rhee’s school reforms

D.C. schools Chancellor Michelle Rhee, already embroiled in a battle with school unions and the D.C. Council over a round of teacher firings, is downplaying allegations that she helped cover up charges of sexual misconduct against her now-fiance Kevin Johnson, mayor of Sacramento, Calif.

A congressional Joint Staff Report by two ranking Republicans that details Rhee’s involvement was first reported by The Washington Examiner Friday morning.

Rhee, speaking through a spokeswoman, said that the report “rehashes old allegations that have long since been dismissed and deemed meritless by local and federal law enforcement officials, including the Sacramento Police Department and the U.S. Attorney.”

The report examined whether White House’s June firing of Gerald Walpin, U.S. inspector general for the Corporation for National and Community Service. In August 2008,  Walpin called for “criminal and civil prosecution” of Johnson and his partner at a Sacramento community organization, St. HOPE Academy. Johnson, a friend and supporter of President Obama, was suspected of misusing Americorps dollars - and volunteers. Walpin was fired in the spring of 2009, prompting the congressional inquiry into whether his dismissal was politically motivated.

No charges have been filed related to allegations against Johnson and his colleagues.

St. HOPE employee Jacqueline Wong-Hernandez told IG office investigators  that Rhee, who also worked for St. HOPE at the time, was told that Johnson had made sexual advances toward an employee. Rhee said she was “making this her number one priority, and she would take care of the situation,” Wong-Hernandez said. Soon afterward, Wong-Hernandez said that Johnson’s lawyer had contacted the victim and that all was smoothed out. Wong-Hernandez retired over the school’s handling of the incident, according to the report.

The congressional report quotes the girl as saying the attorney "basically asked me to keep quiet," and that Johnson offered her $1,000 a month for the duration of her time with St. Hope.  Once investigators learned about that, the report says, they had "reasonable suspicions about potential hush money payments and witness tampering at a federally funded entity."

The news comes just as anger and protest over Rhee’s October firing of about 220 teachers was beginning to settle down.

Jeff Smith, director of school advocacy group D.C. Voice, said “I think her detractors may use it as another part of their case for why she’s unfair, but I don’t see it as having relevance on her philosophy or approach or management of the school system.”

Washington Teachers Union President George Parker’s spokeswoman did not return calls and e-mails requesting comment.

Let me get this right because you people could not spell it out: Michelle Rhee acted as "the cleaner" and took care of the messy Johnson groping allegations at St Hope to shelter him from criminal prosecution? Is that what you people are alleging? If so, I think an investigation is in order, and it should start with the President because if his termination of Walpin was retaliatory, he should be impeached. Johnson needs to be held accountable for his actions. Plain and simple.

There will be NO investigation or prosecution. This is being handled the Chicago way. This appears to be an administration run by thugs lock, stock and barrel. These low life politico's have little or no morals or sense of decency. This guy will make Clinton look like a choirboy when all is said and done. His friends are radicals and haters, his appointees are tax cheats and his advisor's are hacks of the worst kind.

I've been in DC for three years due to running from a stalker and rapist and I was groped by a psychologit and tightly touched me up physicaly while I was in the Park Rd. Shelter. I was too afraid to tell as I know first hand how those in power would have protected him.

Rhee must be put out of office if she allowed her friend to do another female the same or worse and obama should be impeached asap if he allowed this and helped to cover this up.

It doesn't matter how long ago it happened, she knew. He may not have been indicted, but that doesn't negate the fact that multiple allegations have been made as far back as the nineties.

If Rhee can fire teachers and principals but defend a man with such serious allegations hanging over his head that are not going away, she is not right for DC's children period.

Maybe the diverse Rhee likes the diverse Johnson doing diverse sex with young girls as a threesome.

Jeff, don't commentt on this one. You are probably the hope of ward 1. It does reflect on her philosophy. She was on the board of ST. Hope's when the last allegations were made. It is relevant!!!

This pervert actively works to violatethe law and suppress her bosses sexual battery and is then promoted to a new position 3,000 miles away from the scene of her crime. Isn't .that amazing. Not. Democrats are vermin

As a member of the Democratic Party of the United States of America, I can only thank you members of the republican party for tearing down one of your own, Rhee. Technically she may be in our camp, but philosophically she is way way over in yours. Please keep on tearing her down. You are doing us a huge favor! Charters, vouchers, - hon's, these are all yalls ideas. Not ours. Keep up the good work!!!

My question is: Can a woman who covered up sexual advances made on teenagers in a school setting be the best choice for chancellor of a school system.

I love it. Michelle wants to marry a molelster, but has two daughters. Wow! What morals. Picture this, she marries Kevin, accuses him of molesting one of her daughters, he goes to jail, and she get's or has access to all of his money. Go Kevin! Kevin if you like Asian women, find a cuter one, there are plenty! But since you didn't choose a sister, I hope she takes you for all that you have. Good luck suckers!

"Jeff Smith, director of school advocacy group D.C. Voice, said “I think her detractors may use it as another part of their case for why she’s unfair, but I don’t see it as having relevance on her philosophy or approach or management of the school system.” "

If Rhee did indeed cover up an incident in which Johnson made sexual advances to a student - this is such a serious situation that it is unbelieveable that Jeff Smith would minimize it like this.

Mr. Smith - if it was your daughter who was groped and Ms. Rhee covered it up - would you still say the same thing?

Giving unwanted sexual advances to anyone, particulary those under age 18 is seriously immoral, Mr. Smith. And to cover up those sexual advances is also serious immoral.

You are minimizing a very serious offense, Mr. Smith.

This case should be checked some more because if Obama had any part in letting this case slide, then there's something fishy. Michelle Rhee sounds like a person that shouldn't be teaching in a children environment environment in my opinion. Also, I agree with Lady when she said, "Rhee must be put out of office if she allowed her friend to do another female the same or worse and obama should be impeached asap if he allowed this and helped to cover this up."

Sick of the Foolishness

Nov 23, 2009

Pedophiles are disgusting enough but it is sick to knowingly cover up for one --and continue to have a relationship with him. How much respect does she possibly have for herself?

That tells me she'll cover up for anything. She used Noah Wepman to cover up for her own dishonesty in just firing people after they co-manufactured budget pressures/deficits. Her behavior as "Michael Clayton" is indeed relevant, Jeff Smith. As other posters said, let it have been your daughter or son and you'd be screaming an entirely different story. How you can condone this behavior of hers is beyond me.

Page 15 made it clear that CA had a reporting law.

One teacher at St Hope's quit over the cover-up, partially engineered by Rhee.

I am sure that the mayor and council did not know about these matters when Rhee interviewed for the job, and that they will have to take due process into account before dismissing her.

Time to hunt for another candidate for this important position.

At no point in the article is the claim made that the accuser is under the age of 18. The accuser was an employee whose age is not provided. The posts accusing Mr. Johnson of being a pedophile and making sexual advances on teenagers show a lack of reading comprehension skills on the part of the authors.

Nov 23, 2009

This article may not make it clear to you but the pages of the congressional report and Walpins' report make it very clear. The police report in the nineties before he retired from the NBA also make it clear. He has issues with young girls.

Would fiancee Johnson's actions be ok if the youg lady were 19 or 20? I think not! A student is a student.

I think she needs to step down and I hope he ends up in jail. Sexual misconduct against naked girls is unacceptable.
