Activists ready for mass Tea Party protest

Anti-tax activists will gather across the Washington region Wednesday as part of a nationwide tax day protest, which organizers hope will demonstrate public anger with the Obama administration’s ramp-up of government spending and debt.

Tax day Tea Parties being held across the country are intended to evoke the Boston Tea Party of 1773, when Samuel Adams and the Sons of Liberty threw British tea into Boston Harbor as part of a tax protest that helped spark the Revolutionary War.

While tax protesters have marched before, Wednesday’s protest represents the largest concerted effort so far. It will also be the most closely watched, acting as a test for how well conservatives — disgruntled with the direction of the Democratic White House and Congress — can mobilize dissent over the $787 billion stimulus package, corporate bailouts and the president’s $5.6 trillion budget proposal.

Liberal commentators have lambasted the effort, and suggested that the turnout would be limited in size and confined to the hard-right fringe.

A year away from midterm elections, lawmakers are waiting to see what happens on tax day.

“It’s a real barometer of the public out there,” said Virginia Tech political communication professor Robert Denton Jr. “And [lawmakers] are virtually forced to pay attention.”

Whether the event locally amounts to a flop or a coup will, of course, hinge on turnout, projections of which remain elusive. Rebecca Wales, the lead organizer of the event in D.C., declined to venture an estimate. Perhaps overly hedging, she said she expected “more than five” people.

Local organizers are, however, confident enough in public interest that they’ve split the protest into two venues: a “grassroots” stage at Lafayette Park and a “national” stage outside the U.S. Treasury Department.

Johanna Ashworth, 26, plans to show up to both. She and her husband left upstate New York in August for Centreville, mainly for “lower taxes and higher income,” but quickly ran into local tax increase proposals. Ashworth, who is studying for the Law School Admission Test, worried tax policies under Barack Obama would punish her for pursuing her lifelong dream of becoming a lawyer.

“It’s all across the country; it’s not just here in Virginia or New York, it’s everywhere,” she said. “I can’t imagine paying more federal taxes, on top of state taxes.”

Nationally, the Tea Party protest is scheduled to take place in 700 locations, with the largest crowds expected in San Antonio and Atlanta.

“The sky is the limit; we’ll be easily into the six figures” nationally, said Eric Odom, administrator of TaxDayTeaParty.com. “Where we are in the six figures, I have no idea.”

The Tea Party won’t have to bring huge crowds to have an effect, Denton said. For candidates and parties, he said the event offers a great opportunity to target volunteers and raise funds.

i love how conservatives "love" the military and national defense but don't believe in raising funds to pay for them.and to ms ashworth, you're still studying for lsat at age 26? why don't you gain entrance first before you start complaining about the possible tax on the possible money that you might earn in the future.

Yes, we Conservatives understand the need for the Military and have no problem supporting them in every way. We do not, however, believe in supporting irresponsible people or businesses with our hard earned money! As for Ms. Ashworth, I totally understand her concern about the expense of law school. Only to have the government steal her future income.

It would be helpful if one of these media write-ups would actually mention what form the protest will take. Are we being asked to come throw teabags into the bay/river/ocean, to mail teabags to our congress-critters, to consume fresh-brewed tea? Or just to stand around holding signs four hours in a hidden 'official protest zone' that will receive no news coverage?

Lots of people don't start law school until age 26 or later but ad hominem attacks are such valuable rhetorical tools that I can see why you'd use one. National defense is an ever decreasing sliver of the huge govt budget. There was nothing in the TRILLIONS of dollars in waste AKA "stimulus" spent on national defense. Supporting national defense has nothing to do with opposing throwing money at any liberal pet project that concentrates more power in the hands of the federal government. Straw man arguments work really well too. You have the whole suite of liberal debate tools - congrats on your achievement.

dcpaschal, If you don't fight the tax increases now, they'll be little hope of fighting them in the future. Not everyone wants to just roll over like yourself and accept the socialist "CHANGE" we're being force-fed. Good for Ms. Ashworth and the others in this story, at least they're standing up for principle! It's people like her who are doing the work and spending the time, they will be hit the hardest because they've put in the time preparing for their future. dcpaschal, I'm sure if you worked hard you'd probably understand the feeling of being punished for your success.

In 1767 Parliament also passed the Townshend Revenue Act of 1767, which levied new taxes, including one on tea, in the colonies. The Boston Tea Party was a controversy about Parliament's right to tax the colonies. This is Tea Party being held today is a nationwide protest started by the Porkulas protest organized by Carender, but taken over by right wing zealots like FOX and folks like Cavuto,. Malkin,. Beck,. Hannity. Enough with the oh-this-is-a-non-partisan-event. Even Geraldo Rivera and Fox Regular Hater Ann Coulter admitted” that this tea party deal is a movement by conservatives who are upset with Obama. This is nothing but a hate rally.

And there is no tax increase you dummies. The tax rate has been the same for years. You are protesting Bush's tax. Sure taxes will be increased by the 250,000 and over crowd but 95 percent of the folks under that amount will see a tax decrease. Where was all this concern about spending and deficits when Bush was in office?

if this were a move.on rally or a million man rally, no matter the numbers, the media would report it as a huge success. as such, i doubt the media will report is a success no matter what.

By definition, the grassroots is the bottom of the political pyramid, opposite the "establishment," which controls the top. It's a little hard to claim to be “grassroots” when you're in bed with heavily funded organizations like Americans for Prosperity and Freedom Works, associated with Newt Gingrich's organization, and when you've got Fox News, rumored to be the #1 cable news network, aggressively promoting for you. And don't worry jro, it will be a success. Just keep watching FOX.

I am sick & tired of all the Libs bringing up Bush's name everytime there is an issue they do not agree with. When GW was president the media always said whatever is happening is on his 'watch' so he gets the blame. Now it's Obamam's 'watch' and he should 'man up' and quit blaming everyone else for what is happening. It's his bailout, his budget, his nonsensical spending. He should be the man he claims to be and stay at home and do his job. I'll say it again - He has no clue to what the is doing to America.

Why are all the tea parties in the middle of the afternoon? Conservatives work hard, right? Isn't that the point? Why not have them during the evening so that more hardworking tax payers can attend?

I wasn't going to go to any of these tea parties because I thought all the people there would be "kooks and nuts".... but now that I hear that my friends and neighbors who, like me, DIDN'T VOTE FOR OBAMA are to be considered "dangerous" because of that, YOU COULDN'T KEEP ME FROM GOING!!!!!!!! I WILL be at a tea party tomorrow, GUARANTEED!!!!

"White Folks: Did you know the taxes you are complaining about are those of the Bush Administration still in effect? So what are you protesting about? You listen to idiots like Glenn Beck and Rush Limbaugh and you parrot "The goal of this administration is to destroy USA and build USSA)". Obviously past tactics of just tax breaks for the rich, trickle down economics and de-regulation got us in this mess. It leaves me to believe there are other elements of this rally beside simple economics if you get my drift. . The tax proposal by Obama is supposed to lower your tax unless you make over 250,000. Most folks out there in those rallies are not in that category. "So....." Why all this rage? You know why.

GWS: I feel so sorry for you. You obviously do not understand what is going on around you. If you believe "still" think that there is not going to be any tax increase on anyone under $250,000, you have been living under a rock! As far as who organized these events, it has been the local people that have gotten them going. Hosts like Bleck and Hannity are joining the groups, but did NOT organize anything! And if you think this has something other to do than with taxes like "you know" - then I REALLY feel sorry for you. Talk about hate - this is a free speech rally about government spending and the US citizens not getting any representation while "they" are up there signing bills that they are not reading! That should make everyone very angry.

Claire

Apr 14, 2009

Greenie: The tea parties that I have seen posted are not in the middle of the afternoon. All of the ones I have seen posted are starting around 4 p.m. I think everyone can get off by then, and if not, they are going last for several hours.

GWS

Apr 14, 2009

Claire: So why not stand up for the DC Residents who are truly are a part of taxation with out representation. Any moron knows that taxes will eventually have to go up to pay for the situation we are in. And this goes way back. Its going to happened no matter who was in charge. So, this is a free speech rally about government spending and the US citizens not getting any representation. Why now. Where were you when we needed you years ago? Free Speech is good but don't fool yourself. Its a hate rally.

Yes, tyranny. A.K.A. our democratically elected President. You know what guys....I think you might be confusing tyranny with losing. But see, when the guy that you disagree with gets elected, he's probably going to do things you disagree with. He could cut taxes on the wealthy. Remove government's oversight capability. Invade a country that you thought should not be invaded but that's not tyranny. That's democracy. See now you're in the minority. It's supposed to taste like sh.t.. And by the way, if I remember correctly when a disagreement was expressed about that President's actions when ya'll were in power I believe the response was "Why do you hate America?". "Watch what you say." "Love it or leave it." "or you are unpatriotic or un American."..... For god's sake guys. You've been out of power for 11 weeks. You've got a mid-term election in twenty months. Pace your rage". Too much too soon will become ineffective when it counts.

Apr 14, 2009

"Lots of tired old white people protesting the fact that the Obama administration is providing a tax cut to 95% of Americans. Fox News admirably performing its role as a Judas goat for the Republican neocon rightwing nutjobs."

Obama has said that he will not renew Bush's tax cuts, that is a TAX HIKE, GWS. In addition, there is no way, none at all, that he can pay for all these expanded programs and massive spending without a tax cut. No economist would say so either. We are all going to have our taxes raised, in addition to lose Bush's tax cut and anyone who doesn't know that probably isn't employed. It's called WEALTH REDISTRIBUTION.

Apr 14, 2009

Um, we're Americans (rather than "activisits") exercising some of our Constitutional rights while we still have them. GWS, you seem like one heck of an angry and uptight person. Liberals now own the Congress and the President...surely a few people exercising their rights can't be so troubling to you. Remember, the motto of the past 8 years has been "Dissent is the highest form of patriotism." Now it's your turn to tolerate our grass-roots efforts until Janet Napolitano's DHS puts an end to citizens' rights. Liberals are anything but, evidently.

Tea parties are an excellent peaceful demonstration. As a "senior", I am happy that I worked & saved for my retirement. Soc.Sec. cannot cover my expenses. We are told that "entitlements" are insupportable,so who started these? Government, right. Eliminate social security & medicare and allow citizens to control their future with their earned salary. It would allow them a much better existence.

What person would move from "Up State New York" to Centerville VA thinking their taxes would "go down." That is just stupid. Good luck on your LSAT - you wont get into law school anyway.
