Union head in Loudoun calls president's remark a 'cheap shot'

Dozens of police officers contacted the National Fraternal Order of Police in Washington on Thursday to express their shock and anger over President Barack Obama's comment on national TV Wednesday night that a white cop in Cambridge, Mass., "acted stupidly" when he arrested a black Harvard professor.

"I was shocked that the president even made a comment about that [arrest]. It was totally uncalled for," said Marcello Muzzatti, president of the FOP chapter in D.C. "He wasn't there. He doesn't know what happened."

"Wait a minute pal, you weren't there," Ian Griffiths, president of Loudoun County's FOP, said he thought when he heard Obama's remarks. "Automatically the cops are wrong. ... That is a horrible statement for the president of the United States to be making. He has already tried and convicted that cop for doing his job."

The officer in question was investigating a report of a break-in, so he questioned Henry Louis Gates Jr. after a neighbor said she saw Gates "wedging" his way into a nearby home -- that in fact belonged to Gates -- according to the police report. Gates demanded an explanation for the investigation and accused the officer, James Crowley, of racial profiling. Crowley said Gates was causing a scene, so he arrested him on a charge of disorderly conduct.

During a prime-time news conference Wednesday, Obama said Crowley "acted stupidly," and he alluded to America's long history of racial profiling.

"Typical. Just go ahead and blame the cops. It's the easy thing to do," Muzzatti said.

Griffiths said his FOP usually steered clear of politics, but not this time. "Obama took a cheap shot," he said.

"Officers all over the country have been calling us," said Jim Pasco, president of the National FOP. "The problem here is that events like this -- and statements like this -- don't do anything to narrow the void of suspicion that unfortunately sometimes exists between the community and the officers who are there to protect them."

Crowley said publicly Thursday that he would not apologize for arresting Gates.

"Why should you apologize for doing your job and not doing anything wrong?" Griffith asked.

Muzzatti said he "stands behind" Crowley. "He isn't afraid to stick up for what he did," he said. "I applaud him."

Pasco said Crowley acted "as you would hope the officers in your neighborhood would" when responding to a call.

Pasco has been in contact with the White House and Justice Department, but he won't ask for an apology, he said.

"We hope that the cooler heads would prevail and we would be able to move past this," he said.

I think we have put the focus on where it needs to be..the police have a history of playing god and mistreating black people.the officer acted recklessly it doesn't matter the ethnicity of the person arrested..

I think what President said is justified. I think the police should take a better look at their officers conduct. The officers complaining need a reality check. I'm not saying all police officers racially profile but statistics show it happens. Once the professor showed proof that he lived at the address that should have been it. But it wasn't. Even in 2009 racism is still very much alive.

Heaven forbid that anybody criticize the police for what they do?

Give me a break. The officer in this case behaved badly. Case closed. Last time I checked - America is not a police state. ...At least not yet.

OFFICER LET HIS PRIDE GET IN THE WAY WHEN PROFESSOR STARTED THE RACIAL PROFILING TERMANOLOGY...UNDERSTAND THE OFFICER GOT OFFENDED SINCE HE TRAINED INDIVIDUALS NOT TO DO SO...WONDERING IF OFFICER ROUGHED UP SUSPECTS IN THE PAST FOR DISORDERLY CONDUCT BECAUSE OF HIS ACTIONS WITH THE PROFESSOR?

It is not surprising that some Police Officers are upset about President Obama's remarks. Remarks by these officers reflect the "code of silence" embedded in our Police Force. It does not make sense to have arrested Professor Gates for "disorderly conduct" in his own home. Unless police actions are caught on tape, denial on their part is the norm.

What's wrong Muzzatti, having ED problems. The super PIG don't like citizens talking back to your boy scouts. They're lucky to go home at night.

I am so glad the police are not backing down about this. The officer did nothing wrong. Professor Gates lives, eats, breathes racial issues, so what a shock - the second a white officer asks him to do anything, he erupts and claims racism. Professor Gates clearly lost control of his emotions, acted out of control, and he was in the wrong. For God's sake, he told the officer he'd see his "mama" outside - are you kidding me? President Obama is a disgrace for taking the side of this guy in favor of an officer who is clearly an exemplary member of the police force.

I think Gates was overly sensitive and unfair in automatically accusing the policeman of racism. He was angry and uncooperative.

But even so--what possibly justifies the policeman arresting him? THE MAN WAS IN HIS OWN HOME! The police report makes clear that he did show Crowley his ID, with his address, and Crowley knew he was not an intruder. So what if he was rude and loud. Is that a crime? The police should have just left.
This policeman acted stupidly. I'm not saying he broke a law, or that he was racist. But there is no legal justification for a cop to arrest a man in his own home just because the guy gets upset with you.

There is nothing wrong with saying that a police officer acted stupidly. They are humans like everyone else. For the record the police officer arrested Gates out of aggravation and spite, he should have just left the man alone. Instead he abused his power and should be ashamed.

Wonder if there was a blood/alcohol test given. Sounds like the Mr. Gates might have been "under the influence" of alcohol. Booze doesn't make anyone smarter

I don't have to be there to know what happened because I know how it goes. The officer let his pride get in the way and became angry with Mr. Gates for his lack of cooperation. Instead of defusing the situation as we are trained to do, unfortunately it resulted in Mr. Gates' arrest after his identity had already been established as well as his right to be there. Did the situation require further investigation beyond the identification of course, because domestic violence is ever present in this country. To ensure the safety of those that may have been in the house was warranted. Do I understand Mr. Gates' frustration of course I do. Unless Mr. Gates put his hands on the officer he should not have been arrested. STICKS AND STONES...:-) Is this black and white can't say, I think if Mr. Gates were white and done the same the end result may have been the same.
