Conservatives join fight against D.C. gay marriage

May 21, 2009

Conservative members of Congress on Thursday joined the fight against gay marriage in D.C., introducing a bill that would block the city’s efforts to legalize same-sex unions in the District.

The D.C. Defense of Marriage Act states, “In the District of Columbia, for all legal purposes, ‘marriage’ means the union of one man and one woman.”

“The D.C. city council got it wrong, and that’s why we are here today,” said Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, a co-sponsor of the bill. Jordan is a member of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, which has jurisdiction over the District.

The D.C. Council agreed earlier this month to recognize same-sex marriages legally performed in other jurisdictions, and is expected to move forward later this year with legislation legalizing same-sex marriage in the District.

The current legislation would pre-empt a marriage equality bill here and undo the decision to recognize out-of-state gay marriages.

But the bill, which had 30 co-sponsors when it was introduced, faces an uphill battle given the large Democratic majority in both houses.

Asked about the chances of the legislation passing, Jordan said, “You don’t know if you don’t try.”

D.C. Councilman Jack Evans, D-Ward 2, said the bill’s sponsors were wasting their time.

“Congress never fails to surprise with their ability to muddle in our affairs,” Evans said.

“These guys should immediately resign from Congress because they strike me as being absolutely inept.”

Opponents of gay marriage, however, welcomed the congressional intervention.

Bishop Harry Jackson, of Lanham’s Hope Christian Church, called the bill the latest development in the fight against an “out-of-control city council.”

Jackson, who has been at the forefront of opposition to marriage equality in the District, believes most D.C. residents are against same-sex marriage.

“Twelve people just decided this issue,” Jackson said outside the Capitol, adding, “The voice of the people of D.C. will be fairly and justly heard.”

He and other religious leaders are considering strategies to fight gay marriage at the grass-roots level, including petitioning the council for a citywide referendum.

Oh how I wish Martin Luther King was still alive, to teach angry people like Bishop Harry Jackson what it's like to be a real Christian. Why not focus your energy helping the needy, and less focus on trying to stomp on people that want happiness in their lives. I'm sorry, I know he's a Bishop, but this guy is not a Christian .. just a wolf in sheep's clothing!

If Dr. MLK was alive, he would pray for those who are attempting to re-write the laws of nature.

Its aperient this want make it in to print because of the bias and strigent screening by the Examiner staff if the comment is against their bias to one side of an argument however, if Dr. Martin Luther King was alive, he would pray for those who claims to be christian as long as it conforms to their one sided beleif and conflict of nature.

@ John

In his sermon, "Some Things We Must Do," Dr. King warned that the Black community would collapse if it abandoned God's design for family: husband, wife, children. Read the sermon for yourself:

http://mlk-kpp01.stanford.edu/index.php/home/pages?page=http://mlk-kpp01.stanford.edu/kingweb/publications/papers/vol4/571205-001-Things_We_Must_Do.htm

Over 50 years later, King's prediction sadly proved accurate as shown by all the senseless crime, rampant poverty, soaring HIV rates, etc. that now plague Black America.

Hence, King would not only APPLAUD Bishop Jackson's pro-family efforts, but he'd be leading the charge. Moreover, King could care less about being called a "bigot" because the defense of marriage is a just cause.

@Viet Vet

You are correct that King would declare that homosexual "marriage" activists are in need of as much prayer as the White segregationists he often faced.

Coretta Scott King realized that god made gay people, and therefore, gay people deserve the same rights, protections, and responsibilities as straight people.

If pastors like Jackson want gay people to behave more like straight people (ie less promiscuity, say), why not support Marriage Equality?

Why doesn't Pastor Jackson and Pastor Walker focus on how low the marriage success rate is in the black community. Or do they believe, if blacks can't do legal marriage, then no one else should either?

Barbara Jordan, Queen Latifah, Langston Hughes, Bayard Rustin, Alice Walker: all gay. Not deserving of marriage? Why not?

St. Paul said, you know, Jewish Christians, you may find Gentiles unclean, uncircumcised and just plain ICKY, but god loves them. Similarly, anti-gay christians may find gay people ICKY, but god loves them, too.

So sorry to inform you, but God is love.

Getting the same rights and benefits enjoyed by heterosexual couples is a noble effort and I applaud that, but changing the definition of marriage to other than a man and a woman is totally different. Lets keep the issue clear. If gays receive the same rights in civil unions, isn't that what the real objective is?.. or is it.....?

Marriage has changed a lot over the years:

1) Marriage to children (under 18) was legal in the US until the 20th century.
2) Marriage between couples of different races was illegal in many US states until the 20th century.
3) Marriage between couples of different faiths was strongly discouraged.
4) For thousands of years almost all marriages were arranged by parents and couples had no voice in the matter.
5) For thousands of years marriage was only a church institution with no government role. Today, governments grant significant benefits to its citizens who are married.

Marriage has changed a lot over the centuries to improve the institution; the current change to include same-sex couples is just another example. All law abiding, tax-paying citizens should be granted the same benefits and rights.

So, you support your taxes going up to give all Americans the same benefits as military veterans. After all, civilians are taxpayers like soldiers and thus have the "right" to the same health benefits as those who fight in wars.

God created all people and loves them all.

However, he did NOT create homosexuality, which he deems an evil act. Here is an example:

"Now we know that the law is good, if one uses it lawfully, understanding this, that the law is not laid down for the just but for the lawless and disobedient, for the ungodly and sinners, for the unholy and profane, for those who strike their fathers and mothers, for murderers, the sexually immoral, men who practice homosexuality, enslavers, liars, perjurers, and whatever else is contrary to sound doctrine."

1 Timothy 1:8-10

Thus, God is fine with Christians voting for marriage amendments and even anti-sodomy laws. It's not different being labeled crimes.
