Donated firetruck, ambulance recalled to D.C., sources say

The ambulance and firetruck mysteriously donated by the D.C. government to a beach town on the touristy north coast of the Dominican Republic apparently have been called home, The Examiner has learned.

A city hall official who asked not to be named told The Examiner on Monday that the vehicles, on their way to the Dominican Republic town of Sosua, had been ordered turned around. The same information was reported Monday on NewsChannel 8’s “NewsTalk” — host Bruce DePuyt cited Ron Moten, co-founder of the Peaceoholics, as his source.

Moten has said his organization arranged the contribution, which was authorized through a vague emergency rule quietly published March 20 by the D.C. Office of Contracting and Procurement. The vehicles are valued at a combined $340,000.

D.C. Attorney General Peter Nickles on Monday said he still wasn’t ready to comment on the bizarre gift to a town with which no District official claims any relationship. No one in the D.C. government acknowledges any role in the contribution.

“I think Peaceaholics does great work worldwide — and it’s gratifying to know that equipment is being put to good use,” Alan Etter, spokesman for the D.C. fire department, said in an e-mail to The Examiner.

But that is all Etter would say on the matter.

Numerous high-level fire officials have privately denied any knowledge of the donation. The responsibility for auctioning surplus supplies, including vehicles, falls on the contracting office, but all calls to OCP have been redirected to Nickles.

The Sosua-News reported Feb. 11 that a delegation from the District “arrived in Sosua [on Jan. 29] to officially hand over an ambulance and firetruck to the town’s mayor,” Vladimir Cespedes. The Sosua-News article goes on to say that the vehicles “will be transported by ship, and should arrive in Puerto Plata around mid-February.”

“The Americans will also send instructors to train paramedics and personnel from the fire department on how to use such modern equipment,” according to the article, first discovered by WUSA9.

It is unclear which D.C. officials traveled to Sosua.

Ward 3 Councilwoman Mary Cheh, chairwoman of the government operations committee, has called on Chief Procurement Officer David Gragan to explain how the donation happened.

govt officials are always stealing he should be fired

Excuse me? Ron Moten an ex-felon was the source of a fire truck and ambulance leaving the district to go to the Dominican Republic and no one seems to know how that happened? Well maybe the ex-felon who was the source of the story has information about the embezzler (mayor)and the rest of his secret trips. Perhaps a deal with the Dominican Republic? It must be him because now Nickles has to come up with an excuse.

Thank you for following up on this situation. When $340,000 is considered a "small" issue, we're in trouble. The next failure of proper oversight of DC operations could easily lead to the embezzlement of tens of millions of dollars.

Unbelievable that this "gift" could have gotten so far without someone raising the alarm. Only in the District of Corruption. There must be something in the water that causes these ethical lapses. Whatever it is, we need to quarantine these city officials and their cohorts.

Someone should be held accountable and fired for the "attempt" to embezzle taxpayers money. Let's start at the top. Chief Rubin, Chief Shultz, Chief Lee. Let's play dumb. Council should be embarressed for letting theese administrators play them like a piano! Speak with the voice of a VOTE!

This whole city need to be audited... every agency and every official and who ever is responsible needs to be fired and neve again work in the DC Government. Is Mr. Moten a DC.GOV worker or merely an ex-felon who recieves gifts directly from the MAYOR? Just recently Mr. Moten has been named of one of the recipeint's to recieve $6.2 million to go aginst the law and review juvenile records for an early release for heinous crimes of juvenile offenders approved by the Mayor and Schiraldi(YSC) and a discount movie pass. Someone better be checking credentials of these so called organizations, because the way I see it, there has been an increase in CRIME and heard Mr. Moten bought a home in PG from funds/monies he received as part of the crime iniative.

Hey you folks out there: Just get over it - check out an see for yourself how down the place is. If I had the connections, man, I'd be sending them a fire engine myself. Must make sense to most DC residents, and Hey! like Slim Pickens said in Dr. Strangelove - a feller could have a really great weekend there. I wonder if we got any other ready-to-move items in our no-representation colony?

How in the HELL someone who does not work for the DISTRICT GOVERNMENT obtain government property, ley donate it to anyone. It appears to me if you want to find out the truth, arrest this man haul him in front of the judical system and demand answers. If the answers are not forth coming hold him in contempt until he decides to talk. These people have stolen more that enough money from the tax paying citzens of this city. You do not have money for schools or recreation resources but you can not MANAGE what you already have. LOCK these people up, hold the higher ups accountable, including the head of the DC Tax and Revenue office. How in the world does this man still have a job!!
