Examiner Publisher Michael Phelps said the newspaper's existing Pickett Street plant was no longer state-of-the-art and would be closed. He said it was not economically feasible to upgrade the facility because modern printing plants had been developed to serve multiple publications.
Phelps said outsourcing will reduce costs and make it possible to print more full-color pages.
“The sad reality of this change,” said Phelps, “is that we will lose 101 excellent employees now working for us at Pickett Street.”
The transition is scheduled to be completed by the end of January.
“We wanted to make sure the plant employees would continue working through the holiday season,” Phelps said. “We're going to do our best to help them find new jobs.”
The Washington Examiner is owned by Denver-based Clarity Media Inc., which rechristened the paper after purchasing the former Journal Newspapers in 2005.
