Fairfax County elections staff visited jail to register inmates

By: William C. Flook
Examiner Staff Writer
October 8, 2008

Inmates at the Fairfax County jail were encouraged to register and vote last week by elections officials making what the county’s sheriff called the first visit of its kind in his 30 years with the county.

That voter turnout effort is now being defended by county officials, but blasted by Republicans who called it an attempt to influence what could be a close presidential election in the commonwealth.

Both Fairfax County General Registrar Rokey Suleman and Sheriff Stan Barry deny any wrongdoing in the decision that granted Office of Elections on-site access to the Adult Detention Center in downtown Fairfax. Barry did, however, say it was unprecedented in his 30-year career with the county.

“We’d never run into it before, honestly,” Barry said. “They contacted us last week and we were not willing to take any role in it, but basically they were just asking for access to the prisoners who were eligible to vote, and we gave them that.”

The visit came as presidential campaigns were making feverish attempts to sign up voters ahead of the Oct. 6 deadline. The state is considered critical to the White House aspirations of Barack Obama and John McCain.

Felons are not eligible to vote in Virginia without having their rights restored by the governor. Suleman said his office, at the request of criminal defense attorneys who approached his staff, delivered registration forms and absentee ballots to inmates with misdemeanor convictions and those awaiting felony trials.

Suleman, who is listed as a founder of the Trumbull County (Ohio) Young Democrats, ran for office in the Buckeye State as a Democrat earlier this year. He said the office he holds in Virginia is nonpartisan.

Barry, an elected Democrat, said an initial visit took place Wednesday, and again on Friday to pick up completed forms.

Republicans likened the visit to Democratic Gov. Tim Kaine’s drive to restore voting rights to non-violent felons, who are believed to vote disproportionately Democratic.

“I’m stunned and outraged,” said Fairfax County Republican Committee Chairman Jim Hyland. “To me it’s unbelievable that the Democrats are stooping to this, that they want to count on lawbreakers to try and switch this state from red to blue.”

He said the committee is “going to look at all of our legal options, whether this was in the bounds of the law.”

Said Fairfax County Supervisor Michael Frey, a Republican: “Given the budget, and how tight staff is, it does sort of smell that the place they’re going for on-site visits in the Fairfax County jail.”

Suleman said his office will help register voters anywhere an on-site visit is requested. He said his staff picked up about 20 registration forms on Friday, and that he didn’t know the names of the lawyers who contacted his staff.

“As soon as I got wind of it I said ‘OK, let’s make sure we get these guys registered to avoid any other legal headaches [of] being carted in to court to register people,’” Suleman said.

Leave it to the democrats on this one, they win hands down for getting out the vote Virginia is a hick backward state on the felon vote. The commonwealth sells state toll roads to foreign nations and private sector ( thieves) ,while a check bouncer pays the balance of his life? I remember Gilmore saying one a felon always a felon. Well, Governor once a loser always a loser.

It is amazing how far the Dems will go, first they have registered 2.3 million illegal aliens to vote, and now the felons, they are so messed up, they are the lowest forms of life.

So when McCain goes to the hospital and is admitted for a surgery, which he will, then Palin is sworn in to run the country and the military. The Navy Seals, Army Rangers, Recon, the Elite Air Force. Palin in charge of the military? Only an elephant which has a very small brain would vote for that.

Leave to Republicans to be outraged that Americans be allowed to exercise their constitutional rights. Relax -- there are plenty of Republicans behind bars. In fact, many of them used to be in Congress. Watch the Republicans continue to lie their way into office, yet again. Memo: Americans aren't going to fall for it again.

That's right. The Virginia GOP is "stunned and outraged" that Americans who have EVERY RIGHT TO VOTE are actually being allowed to register to vote. No wonder no one trusts them any more. If not lies and dirty smears, it's voter intimidation.

Imagine a highly-decorated officer coming home from his fourth tour of duty in Iraq, having lost both his legs saving the life of one of his men during an ambush. He can't find a job and the military has turned him out on his own, without any support. To buy basic food and shelter, he deals a relatively minor amount of weed to an undercover policeman. He is arrested but he has no money for bail so they put him in the county jail. His trial does not occur until after Nov. 4th, so he is not even convicted of anything on election day. He just a decorated war veteran who is unable to go to his regular precinct to vote. And you heartless Republicans want to deny this war hero his constitutional right to vote??? Shame, shame!

Here is the fundamental difference between the Democratics and Republicans. Democrats are out to spread freedom and to ensure that everyone has the opportunity to exercize their rights. Republicans want to limit those rights and supress voter participation because they can never win an election when there is full participation.

USMC, I'd rather have Palin than Obama. Obama has publicly accused those of us who served in Afghanistan of being murderers. Honestly, neither Obama nor Palin is ready for prime time. But given my choice here, I'll take my chances on McCain and his health for the next four years. Too bad I can't have McCain-Biden. They might fight a little, but at least they aren't wet behind the ears.

After reading some of these outlandish comments on this post, I once again realize how important this election is. I am a Republican all the way, but do listen to what the other side is saying. I cannot believe this garbage is what the Dems believe as a whole. If I'm wrong, we are in deep trouble, mark my words.

I'm amazed that a person to fill the head of voter registration for Fairfax County had to be brought in from Ohio. This whole thing stinks and should be investigated. Electing a person President who couldn't pass muster to be mayor of a small city, a vice president candidate who has recommended deployment of troops "boots on the ground" many times, but had 5 academic and a medical deferral to avoid service in RVN (draft dodger), and John Kerry positioning himself as Secretary of State in an Obama administration is truly scary.

Republicans must get over the shock and disdain phase. Get it in your head: Democrats will steal, lie, cheat, whatever to win, and right now, they're doing a remarkable job at it. It comes down to this, Republican. What are you going to do about it? The barbarian says he will have your head, your wealth, your wife and and your children. He believes you're incapable of doing anything other than complaint. And isn't he right?

Why is this registrar bending over backwards to insure the right to vote for those who have shown their disdain for our socitey, while at the same time rejecting 98% of the absentee ballots from our Military folks? We all know why--those who don't see fit to follow the law are likely to vote for the Democrats, whereas those who choose to make sacrifices on behalf of society are more like to vote Republican. It's a simple, legal way to RIG THE ELECTION.

Oh, this makes me SO proud to be a Virginian, and a 21-year Army veteran. What a surprise that the Democrats are trying to throw out all the military absentee ballots, but go in and heavily pimp for criminal voters. Considering the Democrats' pro-crime, leftist agenda, I'm not really surprised. The criminals know who their friends are. Democrats ought to be ashamed ... but won't be. Just sleaze politics as usual. Military veterans should pay VERY close attention to this. We also know who OUR friends are.

Janie W.

Oct 24, 2008

This is despicable. Throwing out all the military absentee ballots, while actively encouraging every criminal and illegal alien they can to register and VOTE ??? There should be mandatory jail time for those who encourage illegals to vote. And which Party is doing all this? The Democrats. Imagine my shock. This is insulting to our troops AND all military veterans, and no Democrat is getting my vote this time around. As veterans, we need to send a message about how we feel about those who'd cancel our vote.

JOHN HAMMACK

Oct 24, 2008

It is typical democrat behavior. Republicans want to make this country more honest and respectable. We want people to obey the law and work. If obama gets into office he will raise unemployment by giving people the option to not work. Then they will steal, sell drugs, get more welfare...to make up the difference in their income. Don't believe me. Just look at the very obvious facts: whenever a democrat takes over crime and welfare go up.

More GOP BS - At Least Get the Facts Straight

Oct 25, 2008

The 255 military ballots in question are federal ballot forms that REQUIRE witness signatures. Which was put in place to do WHAT? Prevent voter fraud. It's unfortunate and should be corrected. But this is typical Republican BS -- suggesting some sort of illegal activity when the registrar is simply obeying THE LAW -- I know that's a foreign concept for a lot of Republicans. Since there are so many Republicans behind bars, I don't know what they're worried about anyway. Jail is where you'll find a lot of your former members of Congress.

The democrates run Fairfax Co and are determined to keep it, and way ahead in voter registration. The jail visit is just one example. At the Huntington metro, every group I saw had one or more people with Obama buttons, shirts or other party notice.
