Federal workers await word on day off

By: Bill Myers
Examiner Staff Writer
November 20, 2008

Hundreds of thousands of federal employees around the Washington area are waiting for President George Bush to decide whether to give them off the day after Christmas.

The calendar has conspired against federal workers this season — the days after Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Day are all Fridays.

That means employees are facing the prospect of self-restraint at the holiday table or using a vacation day to recover from their feasting. “They’re regularly scheduled workdays,” Office of Personal Management spokesman Peter Graves told The Examiner. “We need an executive order.”

Well, Mr. President?

“I don’t know if we’re ready to announce it,” White House spokesman Carlton Carroll said.

Last year, the president gave a reprieve to workers because Christmas Eve was on a Monday. They got the day off.

But the President has never ordered a holiday for the day after Thanksgiving or New Year’s, Carroll said.

“Well, the day after Thanksgiving is always a Friday,” Carroll said.

Most employees of local governments are in the same boat: Montgomery County Executive Ike Leggett, whose government is facing a budget crisis, is still deciding on whether his workers will get the day after Christmas off.

In Alexandria, employees will get the Friday after Thanksgiving and then Christmas Eve and Christmas Day off, a spokesman said.
Fairfax employees are required to show on all three day afters, a county spokeswoman said.

Things aren’t as bleak for the hundreds of employees who work at D.C.’s courts, which are federally funded and controlled. Most will get the day after Thanksgiving off, spokeswoman Leah Gurowitz told The Examiner.

Those who work with the season’s ultra-naughty — accused felons and juvenile delinquents — will have to show up to work, Gurowitz said.

Bush’s decision regarding the day after Christmas will be made in mid-December, Carroll said.

Federal employees will have some consolation in the regime change — government policy makes Inauguration Day a paid holiday.

Fairfax County Goverment has two days off after the holidays - Thanksgiving, Christmas. Jan. 2 is a furlough day - so we are off but without pay.

Nov 20, 2008

FYI...your article is incorrect referencing Fairfax County...emploees are not required to be at work on Friday after Thanksgiving, Friday after Christmas and receive a Furlough Day the Friday after New Year's.

This article is not accurate. Fairfax County employees do get the day after Thanksgiving and the day after Christmas off this year. Also County employees are being furloughed (day off with no pay) on Jan 2, so in a sense we will have a day off. If getting robbed of your paycheck and sent home is called a day off...

What about those who have use or lose leave? If it's not announced to mid-December, and we're already on leave will we end up losing 8 hours?

It's obvious that the author never leaves the Beltway. ONLY the DC area gets Inauguration Day off as a paid holiday. Those of us on the Left Coast, I mean West Coast, don't - and never have - unless Inauguration Day was a Saturday, Sunday, or Martin Luther King, Jr.'s birthday.

Federal employees are the biggest babies on the planet. We earn leave, depending on our years of service, in increments of 4, 6, and 8 hours every two weeks. To think that we need an executive order [to be off] after a federal holiday is ridiculous. I am a federal employee and I requested annual leave after Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years, way back in January 2008. Here’s a suggestion, you want to be off, after the Thursday, federal holiday, put in a leave request.

Is this all that is important to Federal employees? How many days we have off?

Federal Woman

Nov 21, 2008

To Federal Man You may be able to just "put in a leave slip" for the days you want off, but not everyone who works for the federal government has that luxury. We are service oriented and the phones have to be manned by "x" number of personnel and not everyone can just "put in a leave slip". Any additional days off granted by the President is a day off for everyone here, which we are very grateful for.

What is to be gained by waiting until mid-December to announce whether the friday after Christmas is a paid day off or not. Last minute travel arrangements are always a "lesson in futility". We and our families need and deserve time to plan no matter what the decision. Step up to the plate Mr. President. Show us the respect we have earned and announce your decision sooner rather than later! Thanks from DFAS-IN.

Missouri state government employees have been given the day after christmas off. It would be nice to have it off but then again that is what leave is for.

to Federal Man - some federal offices only allow a certain percentage of employees to be off on any given day. It doesn't matter if you are willing to use leave or if you have use or lose. An executive order is needed to have the day off in some places.

Trust me, in this economy that is the furthest thing on my mind. Like Federal Man posted, if you want the day off after the holiday put in a leave form. We have MUCH bigger issues we ALL should be more concerned about right now.

When did the government policy go into effect making Inauguration Day a paid holiday for Federal employees and what is the reference source?

Bob The Fed

Nov 21, 2008

It is true that some offices will not give you leave during the holiday if too many are off. That said, if you plan ahead and put your leave in early, you have a very good chance. I placed my leave in for the day after Christmas back in April and it was approved. Our office has a bunch of folks that save all their leave until the 11th hour and then expect it to be approved. I have been a Fed for 12 years and I never wait until the last minute on anything. Very bad planning on the part of those who procrastinate.

Forget all this BS and just be happy you are employed. You should be thanking God that you are not or were not working for one of the many companies who had to close down or let employees go this year. I sure an thanking him.

Like others here, our agency insists that someone be in the office the day after the holidays, even though we are not general public oriented. All Federal workers are not GS-12's and 13's. I am the lucky one that gets to be in the office on these days, even though the phone will never ring, and there will be 1 or 2 workers in the office (the low ones on the totem pole), but no work will come my way because most everyone, plus all the supervisors will have been allowed to 'put in a leave slip' (as so many of you are able to do). Of course I will have non-priority work I can do but I would gladly use a day of leave if I were allowed! I would gladly give up a couple of the other holidays during the year in order to be off the days after Thanksgiving and Christmas to be with my family that will be in town for those times. I agree that waiting till the middle of December to let us know seems silly.

I think it would be a good idea to close the Federal Government-non-essential office on all three Fridays. One it would really boost moral, but more importantly, it would reduce the government footprint on this world. The reduction in heating and electricity would be just one of the benefits.

Re Inauguration of the 44th President. I feel all Federal employees should be off to watch this event. The President is our ultimate boss and since it only happens once every four years - we as his employees should be off to watch this event. If not, it should be allowed to view at a work location. I wonder how many DC employees actually view this event. The DC employees already get many, many more bonus that are not given to "field" employees. I say it times to make things even across the board in leave, pay and other bonuses. Yes, I am grateful to have a job, but I do "work" for my pay and just want things to be even.

For those of you complaining about those of us in DC getting the day off for Inauguration Day my only comment is stop whining! The city is turned into virtual gridlock because they shut down the major artery in the city ans well as many, many other streets the night before the parade. You cannot get anywhere in the city that day. I work in a bldg that faces out on Pennsylvania and that won't even allow people in the building that day because of security concerns. That happens in dozens and dozens of bldgs that day. Shuld we all walk to work that day 10, 15, 20 miles and then sit on the sidewalk and work? I think you can see what Inauguration Day is Federa holiday for those in DC.

For those like "Bob The Fed" who tell us to "trust them, in this economy, another paid day off is the furthest thing on their minds." Well, that's hooey, or you would be over at the Economist site and not reading this article. It means something to you or you wouldn't have commented here. Like many of my fellow gov't workers, I enjoy an extra day off with my loved ones now and again. We may not be the best paid or most well-respected, but working for Uncle Sam has its benefits. These occassional days are one of the many special things I receive (and much appreciate) as a federal employee. Do I have other things to worry about? Sure. Cancer, AIDS, the next president's agenda, my kids education. Would an extra day off to forget about the stresses of the workday be nice and appreciated? Definitely. Take a breath, Bob. Relax. Go read about the "economy" and leave these posts to us...

Happy Fed: why don't you just 'put in a leave slip' for inaugeration day? Or, work at home, as that is another benefit enjoyed more so in DC than in other Federal Offices around the country.

Nov 21, 2008

CS DoD administrative lady....that makes no sense. I physically cannot come to work that day, the secret service sweeps the building starting the night before. They don't want us in because we have windows facing the parade route. Should I be forced to use leave when i am told not to work. We all work in different areas, DC has some of its own issues, we don't all have to be equal. If you have a snowstorm or an earthquake where you work and you are told not to come to work, should I say "make her use a leave slip because i am not being treated the same"? Clrealy not. If you want innauguration day off you just have to move to DC and then you will get the day off like everyone else!

Perhaps in this Thanksgiving season it would good to focus on what we have to be thankful for. While I would like an extra day off as much as any one else, I don't expect the president to give federal workers an extra holiday, especially this year. With the economy the way it is and so many people hurting through losing their jobs and their homes, I am grateful to even have a job to come to. Compared to others, we enjoy benefits that many can only imagine. We are blessed to have basically secure jobs with resonably good benefits. I know too many people who have lost their jobs and who would love to trade spaces with us and have it as good we do. I am happy I have annual leave I can use to have the day after Thanksgiving and Christmas off and get paid for it. Despite all the issues and problems that arise in working for the government, the reality is we have lots to be thankful for. A multitude of other Americans would love to be in our shoes.

You know take the days as annual leave. We have people across the United States not in federal jobs that won't get the perk and we should not either. These are tough times and no extra perks should be given to us or expected when we have people out there without jobs and with out the days off either paying our salary through there taxes. And if we have government employees expecting it to be given to us. Well I am not impressed. Use your leave or get to work. We have things to do.

To Bruce Schuelke: about your comment that we, as federal workers should be working and not worrying about an "extra" day off in these hard economic times when our pay is coming out of THEIR pay who don't work for the federal government - sir, I believe you need to look aa little harder at your LES the next time you are paid. I am not sure about you - but, I know I for one am paying taxes and feel that I am working hard for everything I earn!!!!!! By the way, I do work for the federal government in the DoD/USAF. My taxes pay for some of those who don't work a lick and feel more entitled to MY money because they don't want to go look for work because people like you give them handouts.

Nov 23, 2008

based on the comments i read, it seems that most of you are standard M-F...9-5 workers. but...there are some of us (like me) who are considered "mission critical" employees who cant just take off the day and who additionally work rotating shifts and altenative work schedules far from DC. i am a GS-13 lead weather forecaster and since the weather doesnt take a vacation...we are here 24/7 every day. thus any delay in announcing yes-no for christmas eve places additional burdens on us in insuring adequate staff this day. any advanced notice will be greatly appreciated.

But I am so tired of people making assumptions that federal govt employees are lazy and ungrateful. Many of you just cant imagine the hell especially lower level staff have dealt with for the past 8 years under the imitation govt privatization. Many of us govt employess work just as hard or harder that many other employees. Is it our fault that because we work for the govt that we are afforded various types of benefits that the private sector doesnt? When some of you made the choice to not work for the govt that was your choice. So stop hating and discuss the real issues at hand.

Federal Government should close the day after Christmas and New Year's Day. No one is ever in the office. It is like ghost town in 99% of ALL government agency. It doesn't make sense to be off on Thursday and turn around and come to work on Friday, knowing no one will be at work. If your not schedule to be off, you will have a lot of callers calling in the next day. So, midst will close the Federal Government offices, you won't get anything accomplish anyway, not until 1/5/09....

Actually, only the DC area Federals get off on Inaug. Day. The rest of us across the country do not get it off. And, part of the reason we sometimes get a Fri after the Holiday off is because it is more cost effective than heating a lot of buildings for one day after they have been turned off for the holiday.

I appreciate the gift of an extra Holiday day to be with my family EVERY time we are blessed with one. Some of us can not take a vacation day because we are needed in the office during working hours while most every one else is off. For some of us, the extra day is a moral booster - makes the work place a much cheerier place when we all know we will have an extra day of quality time - however we want to spend it. Like someone else said - if you do not want to take the day or feel bad doing so - I am sure there a several volunteer places you can help. I do not mean this in a facetious way at all. I hope we do get the Holiday this December - Cheers!

I bet Feds will get it off. A nice parting gesture from Bush. What does he care anyway? What's so all fired important that it can't wait until Mon 29 Dec? Private companies should give their employees that day off. It's what's called a goodwill gesture. Morale improvement.

I hope that Pres. Bush as one of his last gestures while in office, will give government workers the day off. We have been chastized as lazy, and do nothing employees. I'm a federal worker and I think it would be a good jesture for the president to give us the day after Christmas off. Some private sector companies give bonues which we do not get and I know some people have lost their jobs in the private sector but not all. There are still companies giving bonuses. So don't take it out on the federal workers, why shouldn't we get a bonus? We do our jobs and do it well! Just because we work for the government means we cannot get any bonuses?

I agree with Federal Man. Put in a leave slip and go on about your business. If you have scheduled leave that day, it seem to me that since it is a non work day, the leave will be reimbursed.

Dec 11, 2008

You don't always get reimubursed if you put the leave slip in. The President is supposed to decide my mid-December about it, but so far no update. The inauguration is going to be a four day weekend for Feds in DC. Monday is MLK Day. I don't think federal employees should complain too much about December 26th, if it is not a day off. The federal government provides reasonably generous leave. However, from the standpoint of waste, I don't see much point in having the government buildings open when probably 5% of the workers are going to show up.

Govmint Worker

He needs to man up and make a decision now! By the time he decides, most people will already be on vacation and will lose the opportunity to rearrange their schedule or even donate the extra day to someone in need. I wouldn't hold my breath on this one.

Dec 19, 2008

For all the other fed. empl. who don't get inauguration day as a paid holiday, I'm pretty sure he's only talking about federal employees around the district getting the day off for inauguration. It's dc local news and in the beginning of the article he says that "thousands of federal employees around the Washington area are...". I think that statement continues for the rest of the article specifying which employees he's talking about. Why would West Coast employees get the day off? You don't have to deal with the 5 million estimated people that will be here and the traffic, so on and so forth. Don't be so bitter.
