Fire official went to Caribbean to donate truck

The deputy D.C. fire chief in charge of all department apparatus traveled to a Dominican Republic beach town in late January, and stayed for nearly a week at D.C. taxpayers’ expense, to announce the donation of a firetruck and ambulance.

Troubled history
» D.C. inspector general derided the District’s surplus property disposal methods in a September 2004 audit.
» Audit claimed Office of Contracting and Procurement was selling used firetrucks and ambulances for a tiny fraction of their value. In one case, a 1986 Ford E-1 Pumper, with a dealer asking price of $59,000, was auctioned for $75.

Deputy Fire Chief Ronald Gill Jr. was in the Dominican resort town Sosua from Jan. 29 through Feb. 4, spending $135 per day for a total cost of $810, according to documents provided to the D.C. Council’s Public Safety and Judiciary Committee. The travel information was submitted March 4, in response to questions from the council panel ahead of the fiscal 2008 oversight hearing.

The reason for his six-day trip to the north Dominican coast: “Fire truck donation.”

It is unclear whether the $135 was a per diem or included hotel charges. Gill has put $1,847 on his department-issued charge card so far in fiscal 2009, those same documents show.

Gill declined comment Tuesday. Fire Chief Dennis Rubin is slated to appear before the public safety committee today to discuss the department’s fiscal 2010 budget proposal.

“I’m looking at the whole thing,” Attorney General Peter Nickles said Tuesday. “I don’t want to be premature in my comments.”

Peaceoholics Inc., a nonprofit anti-youth violence organization, says it organized the gift. The donation was authorized through an emergency rule published in the D.C. Register on March 20 — nearly two months after Gill announced the donation.

“They’re on their way back,” Ron Moten, Peaceoholics co-founder, said Tuesday of the vehicles, which are valued at a combined $340,000. “They made it down to Miami. Once all the flak came, we decided to bring them back.”

The decade-old firetruck and ambulance are worthless and at auction the city would get nothing, Moten told the “NewsTalk” program on NewsChannel 8. But the D.C. inspector general wrote in a 2004 audit, “At the time of disposal, used fire and EMS apparatus are usually worth substantial sums of money.”

The Sosua-News on Feb. 11 reported that the “Americans will also send instructors to train paramedics and personnel from the fire department on how to use such modern equipment.” Sosua, Moten said, is an impoverished town.

Will somebody please explain to me how an ex-felon is highly involved with sending a fire truck and ambulance to another country? Things are out of control. This same ex-felon can walk into any school with the mayor's approval but if he applied for a job with the schools, the background check wouldn't allow him near children. What's up with all of this?

1. Quesion for Commentator #1: Whow is this"ex-felon" you are refering to? May be we are thing of same person(s)! 2. Media/public forgets the "KEY" DC-Govt Officials in CONTRACTS-DISPOSAL dept. and top Attorneys swho, instead of POLICING and STOPPING such deals in the bad times of "FINANCIAL TSUNAMI" (DC-CFO's words), are the true "FACILITATORS". The TOP-OFFICIAL in DC-CONTRACTS/Disposals dept was already filred for millions in fraudulent contracts and other illegal deals at Baltimore City schools plus he took contractor trip to Ceribbean Islands before awarding such contracts. FBI raided his offices and his manager, contractor, etc. were sent to Jail. Only difference is now in DC-Govt he handles even bigger slice of $1B+ and corrupt Fenty administration (etc.) protect him - where are the DC vopters and the media --- WAKE UP ---- R. I.

I'm sure that there are plenty of small towns in the UNITED STATES that are in need of such equiptment. I quess they don't rate because they have no resorts. DC has not changed, the inmates are running the jail.

Raj Inder/dc taxpayer: You have a lot more info than I do. I am referring to Ron Moten, who doesn't even work for DC Govt. He and the rest of his peaceaholics got a grant from the mayor to run around the schools in an effort to assist with violence. They've done a great job(ha ha) I'm just not understanding how a peaceaholic got involved with sending dc property to the Domincan Republic. What am I missing here?

peaceaholics is a joke and so is Moten.Dc gov is giving big dollars to these guys and I dont c what they're doin.the crime rate is the highest in ward 8, which is where their headquarters is located. They actually pay kids to screw up in school, so they can come in and act as if they solving something. They dont give a darn bout the kids. The bottom line is they are well known for throwing parties and having fun with our taxpaying money, but what have they really accomplished?

Everyone knows that Ronald Moten, CEO of the Peacehololics is the ex-felon listed below. He is too selfish to even consider sending a fire truck and ambulance to the Dominican Republic. Covering up for the Mayor is apart of his duties to continuously receive earmarked taxpayer dollars on an annual basis. The only reason that he is willing to fabricate his part in this scandalous act is to keep his and his partner's money roll coming in as a direct result of his continued promulgation of political favors on behalf of the mayor. Moten will gladly be a pass through non-profit organization for the Mayor to continually launder his dirty laundry? The Mayor and his male executive staff, associates, and friends have a free for all during their stay at the Dominican Republic, wine, alcohol, women, you name it at no expense to them. A favor from one corrupt Mayor to another.

In today's article, Ronald moten stated that he "organized the gift" This is an outright lie! The gift was ordered to be sent by the Mayor himself and he needed a non-profit that he could trust to hide his misgivings! Of course, what better ally than a convicted felon who is accustomed to deceiving the public and the law! Ron Moten lied during his interview with Dorothy Brazil and he is lying to the readers of the Washington Examiner. It is time to hold these crooks responsible for their continued fraud and deception, especially during an economic recession that have thousands of DC residents jobless, homeless and in need of basic assistance. Enough is enough!

There is too much corruption from the top officials of DC government, no wonder why the lower ranked employees follow suit.

In today's examiner article, Ronald Moten stated that he "organized the gift", he further stated that "we decided to bring them back". Wow! The City Administrator and other top level representatives did a very good job at briefing him as to what to say. He has lied about his involvement during yesterday's interview with Dorothy Brazil and he is lying to the readers of the washington examiner today.

Val taxpayer: Thank you for your input. This is crazy as he//. The WP won't even touch this story. No wonder the mayor blocked the Examiner from DC govt. workers. Keep it going Mr. Neibauer!

I guess what gets me the most is that the Fenty administration really thinks that the public is stupid. Reasons to fully investigate this administration become clearer and clearer. To put Moten, a convicted felon, who cannot even obtain a passport, in the mix would suggest that the crimes go deeper than this. Perhaps he's part of the reason that Fenty no longer needs a security detail at home and that he drives himself. Perhaps he's in places no mayor would want to get caught in. Secondly, who approved the fire official's administrative leave, the per diem and who signed off on the approved donation? Mr. Neibauer we would like these questions answered.

WOW!!!!! How in the world would... could Ron Moten have possession of or control over any Govt. property? Even if the city was donating it... how in hell could HE possibly be involved. This is just rediculous.

Rubin is clueless. Glad he finally admitted it to the city. That’s why Boss Fenty hired him. Big Al was promoted because he is dumber then King Rube Tube. Godfather Shultz is the brains behind the operation. The godfather thought it best to use retarded Ronnie Gill since their token lying Brian lee is too hot. But, don’t underestimate them. These guys paid a lot of money for their GED’s from (RNCC) Red Neck Community College. This matter was leaked by PIO Crosswhite, the wanna be godfather.

Moe and crew are career criminals with a history of turning state evidence. They will do the same for the FBI against Fenty and Rubin once under a federal grand jury investigation. Everyone knows a Peter Nickles investigation is a joke. So, Rube, Big Al and Godfather Schultz get the KY ready. Crosswhite is the flunkie on deck and Dookie Duggie will be the new Lee.

On Tuesday April 14, an employee of the Peaceaholics sexually assualted a student at Spingarn High School. The employee name is Barry. Barry spent 22 years in prison for MURDER. HE was working as part of a four member team of Peaceaholics. There are as many as 8 young ladies whom were propositoned by Mr. Barry. There is an investigation and the Peaceaholics were removed from Spingarn on the next day. I am upset because it appears the the DC Government and Michelle Rhee is sweeping this under the rug. This man had no clearance which is required under DCPS policy. There are similar allegations at Ballou and Spingarn. Why does DC Government continue to employ ex-cons to work with our children. There should be an investigation into the Peaceaholics. This story is verifiable through the Freedom of Information Act. The Peaceaholics are allwoed to prey on young girls in the DC public school without consequences.

Everyone speaks on Ron Moten being a ex felon. Because you are an ex felon do you think that he shouldn't be able to have a clean life or should he continue to be reminded of is past and go back doing the things he did years ago. What are his critics doing to help these kids, NOTHING. If you feel he's doing a bad job you step up a help these kids. IT'S ALL ABOUT THE KID'S !!!!! RIGHT!!!!

I am a DC resident as well as teacher for over 15 years. I genuinely believe that the Peaceholics mean well and want to make a difference in the lives of our children here in District of Columbia which seems to be failing. If a teacher, administrator, tutor, mentor, group, organization, and or church member wanted to assist in making a difference whether academically or socially first would have to pass a "CRIMINAL BACKGROUND CHECK!" What makes the Peacaholics "UNTOUCHABLE!" I am beginning to believe that DC is corrupt. By knowing the Mayor, you are just entitled. And, I reiterate, "JUST UNTOUCHABLE!!!!!!!"
