Frederick County sheriff worried about MontCo gangs

Montgomery County's relativelywelcoming stance on illegal immigration may be attracting gangs that are causing problems for its stricter neighbor, said Frederick County Sheriff Chuck Jenkins.

"I believe that the policies of Montgomery County are beginning to affect Frederick County," Jenkins said.

He pointed to two recent armed robberies in Frederick by Montgomery County members of the Latin Kings, a notoriously violent street gang that typically has illegal immigrants as members, as examples of what he said could be a growing problem.

In an August armed robbery of the Philly Cheesesteak Factory on Urbana Pike, one of the robbers hit a victim in the head with a hammer, police said. And a store owner was shot at after an armed robbery by some of the same suspects nine days later in Point of Rocks, according to news accounts.

The suspects then fled to Montgomery County, where three were caught soon after, police said. Criminal investigators later obtained indictments against four teenagers and a 20-year-old who police say were involved in one or both robberies.

Jenkins said he was concerned that the Montgomery County Police Department's policies could be making the county an attractive base for violent gangs to commit crimes in neighboring Frederick.

The two counties have divergent policies on when law enforcement personnel contact U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents after arresting a suspect who may be in the country illegally.

Montgomery County allows its officers to contact ICE only if they arrest someone for violent or handgun-related crimes and not based on an "individual's legal status and/or perceived gang affiliation." No such limits exist for Frederick County sheriff's deputies.

Montgomery County's rank-and-file police officers are "disgusted" at what they perceive to be a politically motivated immigration policy that ties their hands as law enforcement officials, according to Walt Bader, past president of the Fraternal Order of Police union.

A report issued by Northern Virginia law enforcement officials last week said anecdotal evidence suggested that anti-gang policing measures in Virginia, including referring suspected illegal immigrants to ICE, had led to gangs fleeing to Maryland and the District, where immigration enforcement isn't as strict.

But Montgomery County officials and immigrants rights groups argue that aggressive immigration tactics by local police departments lead to a loss of trust from immigrants, the vast majority of whom aren't in gangs.

CASA of Maryland's director of services, Kerry O'Brien, said Jenkins was trying to "stoke fear" about illegal immigrants. She said the examples of gang violence Jenkins cited were more an outgrowth of Frederick becoming more urban than because of Montgomery County's immigration policies.

Our Government, past & present, Republican & Democrat, have allowed the invasion of 20 to 30 million criminals and uneducated peons which is the largest invasion of any Nation, at any time, by any means & in direct violation of Article IV, Section IV of our Constitution.

This refusal to abide by our Constitution or enforce our Immigration Laws should be classified as Treason of the most foul kind, & as grounds for impeachment & trials for Treason!

Not only have they allowed the invasion, they force American tax payers to pay Billions on Billions of dollars to provide Welfare, Prison cells, Educate the invaders numerous children, and free medical care, at the same time the invading horde break numerous laws and massive document fraud, & are destroying our schools, hospitals, communities, culture and standard of living while Robbing, Raping, Killing & Assaulting American Citizens WAKE UP PEOPLE!

Again, we must vote for the canidate that will uphold the US Constitution to invasion of illegials, proscute when we can, make examples, and let them go to Maryland for free stuff! Virginia is taking Virginiaq back and look out if you are here just to get free medical care, oh yeah I've seen it first hand at Kaiser..whereby the county gives them while wearing hundreds of $$$$ in gold a free medical card for the same services I pay over $400/mo for..some free schooling for kids who are not even told to speak engilish in a store...so yeah..let them run to Maryland!

Well oh well, it sure seems like the state government promoted mass immigration of illegals finally pays off.

Now, who would have guessed that inviting in the people who were unwanted in other states for their criminal actions would cause them not to behave in the best of ways?

I mean, come on now, how should our elected officials have known that inviting criminals and notorious delinquents would have such a serious side effect?

I am a foreigner myself and it took me several months and a load of money to be able to live in this country. Not only did have a college degree and vast work experience before moving to the US, I also spoke fluent English. Hence, it seems completely unreasonable to me to allow millions of people who possess neither to immigrate without the necessity to do it the legal way.

thank G-d we have all Republicans in charge of the Commonwealth again! NO more free stuff, services, accomodations, and if you do the crime in VA, know ahead of time you will fry! This is a capital punishment state. forget endless appeals for people who have no regard for life anyhow, they will be removed from the rolls and no longer will take up space..just like the crimes they commited...so, if anyone is distrubed by this change....run fast to liberal Maryland..they can help you with getting free stuff, services...and will be soft on crime for all...they have deeper, kinder pockets...lol

If CASA of Maryland spent as much time preventing illegal aliens from entering and residing in the state Vs activelydefending them, perhaps crimes committed by illegals would not be escalating at the rate they are. CASA, LaRaza, and every elected/appointed official who does not aggressively go after and remove illegal aliens should be charged with aiding and abetting.
