Men allege sexual abuse by D.C.-area priest in 1950s-60s

Three men have alleged in lawsuits that they were sexually abused decades ago by a Washington-area priest.

One of the alleged victims, George Thompson, now lives in Arizona. He said in his lawsuit that Joseph Dooley sexually abused him while Dooley was monsignor at St. John the Baptist Church in Silver Spring and Thompson was a teenage parishioner.

Thompson alleges the attacks occurred between 1963 and 1967.

Two other men, who do not want their names to be made public, allege in another suit that Dooley abused them while they were young parishioners of Dooley’s in the late 1950s through the mid-’60s at Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Bethesda and Annunciation Catholic Church in Northwest Washington. One of the men says he served as an altar boy and was only 9 years old when the abuse started.

All three victims allege engaging in oral and other sexual acts with Dooley.

Dooley is named as a defendant in the suits, even though he’s now deceased. Also named are the three parishes and the Archdiocese of Washington.

The archdiocese has not yet been served with the lawsuits, archdiocese Communications director Susan Gibbs said Thursday.

“We take [abuse allegations] seriously,” Gibbs said.

Thompson came to the archdiocese in late 2005 with the allegations, Gibbs said, and they reported them to authorities.

The suits were filed in Superior Court in Delaware, according to a director of the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests, because of a ruling that extended the statute of limitations. All three victims allege some of the abuse occurred at Dooley’s trailer at Rehoboth Beach, Del.

“We’d like ... the archdiocese to use all their resources to reach out to victims,” said Becky Ianni of SNAP. “We want the archdiocese to keep their promises, not keep silent.”

The Catholic Church continues to cover up these acts of horror. This has to stop and the only way to break this cycle of silence is to continue to expose predator priests until the last victim is heard and helped. The Church fails miserably in its outreach to victims. If it cared at all about the children its priests have harmed, we wouldn't be hearing so many cases from adults who have suffered their whole lives carrying secrets of abuse.

The Catholic church does not care about its children. I'm 59 now and still wake up at night after having a bad dream about Father Dooley. I'm trying to catch my breath and then when I do, I start to cry like I'm 13een years old again. When will the abuse be over for me???

The Catholic Church wants desperately to quiet the victims and deny that the problem of pedophile priest still exists. Only through using the courts to compel the church hierarchy to reveal the truth will we see an improvement in the protection of children. Abuse thrives in an environment of secrecy.

The Catholic church has been a huge disappointment in its handling of these cases. Years ago when they formed the lay review board they had the chance to take responsibility and insist on positive change. They missed this opportunity and membership will continue to suffer as a result. They lack strong leadership and continue in this shroud of secretive behaviour. Nothing has changed. What a shame.

The Catholic Church is pathetic. They will always be looking over their shoulder as long as they continue down the same path with the same policies. They think if they ignore it, deny it, and hide it, it will go away. It will only get bigger. It is time for the Catholic Church to stand up and take responsibility.

On his visit to the US the Pope said "It is your God-given responsibility as pastors to bind up the wounds caused by every breach of trust, to foster healing, to promote reconciliation and
to reach out with loving concern to those so seriously wronged." What has the church done to reach out to other victims of Dooley's? What have they done to expose his crimes to those in the community? The church has failed to follow their own policies of being "open and transparent" and victims continue to live in pain, feeling they are all alone. When are the Pope's word's going to become reality?

I'm curious as to why it took this long to come to light.
