MontCo legislation would target anti-abortion centers

The four pregnancy centers in Montgomery County that don't provide abortion services would be required to tell potential clients that they should go elsewhere for medical advice, under new legislation proposed by Councilwoman Duchy Trachtenberg.

Trachtenberg said the private centers, which promote themselves as a place to help women with unexpected pregnancies, often provide false and misleading medical information about the dangers of abortions or contraceptives in attempts to convince women not to abort their pregnancies.

Her resolution would require the centers to present potential clients with disclaimers in English and Spanish that the information given by the center isn't intended as "medical advice or to establish a doctor patient relationship." It would also require the centers to tell potential clients that they should consult with a health care provider before making decisions about their pregnancies.

"It's pretty much just a consumer protection measure more than anything else," Trachtenberg said. "We're not saying they can't seek clients and they can't counsel them."

She noted that the four centers outnumber the three full-service family planning clinics in Montgomery, which are funded partially with county dollars.

The legislation is sponsored by five other council members and is set to be introduced Tuesday.

But proponents of the centers said the County Council's efforts are misguided and ill-informed, and their clients are well aware of the center's mission.

"The people who are using our services aren't misunderstanding what we do and what we're providing," said Jacqueline Stippich, executive director for Shady Grove Pregnancy Center. She said most of the center's new clients are referred by past clients.

A similar proposal currently being considered by the Baltimore City Council.

Rockville Pregnancy Center Executive Director Gail Tierney said those types of legislations are singling out anti-abortion pregnancy centers to score political points.

"I just kind of find it strange as a medical clinic to make us list things we don't do," Tierney said. "It's like having Home Depot having to post a sign saying: We don't sell dresses."

Why isn't the MoCo council concerned with targeting the day labor centers since they actually harbor criminal aliens?

The Montgomery County Council should pass Councilwoman Lucy Trachtenberg's proposed legislation to require so-called pregnancy centers to stop giving false and medically misleading information to women with problem pregnancies. These centers put getting women to follow their scarcely neutral sectarian religious medical codes ahead of providing medically accurate information to women in need of help.
(By the way, "concerned citizen" should stop using the silly abbreviation for Montgomery County; "moco" is the common Spanish word for mucous or snot.)

This is good legislation and needed by women who are seeking accurate information when seeking family planning options. Women who may be facing problem pregnancies need to know the qualifications and performance standards of people they are asking for help.

There is potential harm if the guidance being provided by any organization is based on misunderstandings. The truth shall set you free!!

So let me understand this. Anti-choice folks want public dollars to lie to women but they refuse to fund actual the sharing of scientific fact and medical care? This bill should be passed!

"...are singling out anti-abortion pregnancy centers to score political points" Shoe is on the other foot now eh?

Since the County provides no funding to these pro-choice centers they should not provide their advice either.

Pregnancy centers typically provide sonograms and factual information regarding prenatal development and abortion risks that abortion centers, for obvious (financial) reasons, are unwilling to provide. Thus, before passing such legislation, I think it’s incumbent on the county council to determine whether or not the four pregnancy centers in question “often provide false and misleading medical information about the dangers of abortions or contraceptives.” Otherwise, it sounds like the only “consumers” the county council is trying to protect are the family planning centers, not the mothers or their biological offspring.

It such a terrible economic time I think the County Council to be figuring out how you could be attracting jobs to our communities and lowering our taxes rather than aiding and abetting their friends in the abortion industry. What about their inaccurate and misleading information at our expense to further their lucrative abortion business? Maybe the Council should consider this since they are spending our money. The Council priorities are severely misplaced and we, as taxpayers, should demand that they get on track and use common sense, if they have any, to help our community. I expect that by the time all is said and done that literally thousands more County residents will have become aware of the excellent services these crisis centers provide and donate money to them. And after that, vote these idiots out.
