Nonprofit head: Group's donations unfairly scrutinized

Ron Moten, the embattled leader of a nonprofit group that is at the center of the controversial firetruck and ambulance donation to a Caribbean beach town, said he has been unfairly scrutinized simply for doing a good deed.

“If we would have thought that trying to help ... would have brought about all this chaos, we wouldn’t have done it,” Moten said.

Earlier this month, The Examiner reported that D.C. had given Moten and his group, Peaceoholics, exclusive control of a “surplus” firetruck and ambulance that Moten in turn donated to Sosua, the Dominican Republic. Public outcry forced the city to recall the gift but hasn’t forced a public explanation from the Fenty administration.

The controversy has escalated, and earlier this week two top legal advisers of Mayor Adrian Fenty were linked to the donation. Moten said he got involved toward the end of a process that began in 2007 when his friend, William Walker, founder of the nonprofit video production company Faith Productions, led a team of youngsters to Sosua for a youth boxing tournament.

Walker later brought a delegation of Dominicans back to the District and asked the city government about donating rescue equipment to the resort town, Moten said.

“He took out a second mortgage on his house for the first trip,” Moten said. “People promised him he’d get help from the city for trip, but when the money didn’t come, he didn’t want to let the kids down.”

Walker was later given a proclamation of thanks from the city council for the trip.

Among those who also came in to help was Sinclair Skinner, Fenty’s fraternity brother and one of the mayor’s lifelong friends, sources said.

Examiner intern Teddy Kahn contributed to this report.

If it were that simple, we wouldn't have the controversy. Keep digging!

The story gets more and more interesting, if not incredulous. Moten really expects someone to believe that they were doing a good deed by sending over DC taxpayers' property and using our funds to some Dominican Republic officials, who, by his own account, simply hosted hosted a boxing tournament for a handful of kids? His explanation does not make any sense. Why would the city offer this sort of help to this resort town when, as Moten claimed, it was Walker who put up the initial funds? Shouldn't Walker get the fire engine and ambulance? Moten obviously isn't as smart of a hustler as he thinks. When you quoted him; "If we would have thought that this would have caused so much chaos", this may be the only truth he spoke. He and his cronies didn't think....that they were going to be caught.

I bet Mr. Walker is sorry he got involved with Moten. Sounds like his non profit may have been doing some good. But along comes the hustler Moten to take credit for all that he "thinks" he's done for the city and all hell breaks loose. Where there's a peacaholic, you get anything but peace.

I am not buying this "I'm the innocent guy" excuse. Just let the investigation play out and we'll see who is clean and who is dirty. At the very least, the Mayor's Office had FORE-knowledge of the deal and SHOULD HAVE understood the correct process for transfering such property, it at all. They SHOULD HAVE known that misstating the odometer reading in determining salvage value was wrong and fraudulent. Moten may be able to hustle some folk but I am not one of them.

I'm just de-lighted that our State Attorney General is investigating himself, cuz it was it not his office what gave the OK for that beat up ol - BRIGHT RED AND SHINY - Fire Engine (with millions of miles on it) to go South to one of the vegetating nations. Go get em, Nickles, SIC EM! HUNT! And hunt for a DC residence, too.

NEWSFLASH Mr. Moten: The FEDS will soon be introducing you to "RICO" as in Racketeering Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (Peaceoholics). You just bought your "Non-profit" a federal audit. I would suggest you go to the feds first and work out a deal and tell what you know about the government corruption. It is not "SNITCHING."

Well it is no surprise to most of us that MOE is ready to turn on his "friend" (FENTY) when the heat is turned up! The same friend that made sure that Ronald Moton and his partner Jahaur Abrahams, was able to take advantage of a more than $7.6 million dollar taxpayer paid gift from the Mayor of earmarked grants in addition to executively ordered sole source contracts that neither Mr. Moten nor Abrahams were entitled to. Shame on you Moe, maybe you and Jahaur will retreat to your own recently purchased waterfront property that you purchased in Virginia, Beach. Well the blame game is only beginning. I think that we are heading for a US federal investigation for this amount of money, what do you think?

For all of you who are not sure of Ronald Moten's and Jahaur Abrahams part in this latest city scam, well check this out. MAYOR Fenty has on numerous occasions, year after year, directed his executive staff to provide his buddy, his long time friend Moe millions of sole-cource contracts. Those cabinet level agency heads include, but are not limited to, Vincent Schiraldi (DYRS); Dan Tangolini (City Administrator); Neil Albert (Office of Planning and Economic Development); and just recently Millicent Williams (CYITC). Once the FBI, DC Auditor, and US Attorney General's Office review all of the agency documents, this will be attested to. Just follow the $$$$$$ Remember, anyone appointed by Fenty, will not provide due diligence on these matters, they are only interested in holding on to their own jobs!

wow! This is all mind-blowing reading this. I know everyone has their own opinion to contribute to thiese stories that are steadily pouring in. While it's not for me to judge anyone ( MOE), I can honestly say that when it came to helping out these youths.. He was very concerned about doing just that..I work with a few organiztions through out the D.C. area and he has been there to help and support us whenever we asked him to.
What ever bond he has with the Mayor is their personal brotherhood, that has not changed just because each of their status has changed...
