Tracking bracelet leads to shooting suspect

A court-monitoring ankle bracelet has led authorities to charge a Northwest teenager in the near-fatal shooting of a retired D.C. police officer, The Examiner has learned.

Lenny Webb, 18, of the 1300 block of Taylor Street Northwest, is charged as an accessory to the early Tuesday robbery and shooting of John Timbers. Timbers, who had recently retired from a long career in the third police district, was enjoying a cigarette in front of his home on the 5900 block of 13th Street Northwest when he was approached by two young men.

One of the youths held up a handgun and said, “You know what time it is, don’t you?” a police source told The Examiner.

Timbers reached for his service weapon and fired off two shots. The gunman fired one shot, piercing Timbers’ hip and causing damage to his internal organs. He underwent at least two surgeries.

Before going into surgery, Timbers told his fellow officers that one of his attackers was wearing an ankle bracelet given to offenders who are out on bail.

A quick check of GPS satellites led authorities to Webb, a police source said.

The hunt continues for the second suspect, who may have been wounded in the shootout, the source said. Police found a blood trail leading from the scene and going down the street.

Authorities believe the missing gunman may have been a schoolmate of Webb’s, the source said.

Timbers is on the mend, his union chief, Kris Baumann, told The Examiner.

“Thank God he’s going to be all right,” Baumann said. “And thank God he was able to defend himself.”

and thank god that someday other law abiding citizens will be able to defend themselves in a similar manner by using a handgun that the Second Amendment allows them to own.

Yes, thank god he was able to defend himself. Now it is time for the powers to be in DC to realize it is "every citizens right" to defend themselves from the thugs of this world. DC's gun ban has been a miserable failure. The only thing it accomplished was to make honest citizens fear for their safety, with no way to defend themselves. Of course those same powers to be are not concerned, they have their weapons, they have their police bodyguards, the only thing they don't have is common sense!

Lucky he was a retired D.C. Cop and not just an ordinary citizen, otherwise he would probably be prosecuted for unlawful use of a weapon. You folks need to get with the program and elect a city council that will allow you to protect yourselves. There aren't that many of you who are retired LEO's.

It seems that he guy had learned his lesson by being placed on the ankle monitor... well not really. I am glad that the ex cop had the ability to protect himself. Too bad that the rest of the city are sitting ducks for other criminals. DC needs to open there eyes, criminals will still get guns and use them to harm law abiding people. Remember that an armed society is a polite society.
