LAUREL, MD. — Construction has begun on a $60 million space department building at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory in Laurel.

University officials said Wednesday that the new building will consolidate the work of space scientists and engineers currently scattered throughout 20 different buildings. The building will house offices and technical facilities and laboratories for about 550 scientists, engineers and support staff.

The 200,000-square-foot complex will open in mid-2011 on Johns Hopkins Road across from 32-building campus. The lab's space department works on developing space systems for NASA and Defense Department missions.
