BALTIMORE — A postdoctoral research fellow at the University of Maryland medical school is facing drug charges after his live-in girlfriend, also a researcher at the university, died in an apparent overdose.
Police say 32-year-old Clinton McCracken told investigators his girlfriend had trouble breathing after injecting herself with the narcotic known as bupe, which is commonly used as a heroin substitute to treat recovering addicts.
The woman, 29-year-old Carrie John, died Sunday night. McCracken has not been charged in her death.
According to charging documents, McCracken told police that he got the drug from an online pharmacy in the Philippines.
Police searched McCracken's home and found about three dozen marijuana plants, along with other drugs and drug paraphernalia.
