WILMINGTON, DEL. — A World War II veteran from Delaware is receiving one of France's highest honors for his service more than 60 years ago.
Retired Staff Sgt. Samuel Kramer will receive the Chevalier of the Legion of Honor in a ceremony next Friday at the French Embassy in Washington.
The 93-year-old, who lives in Wilmington, says he was stunned to hear about the award.
He joined the Army in 1935, serving in various posts. His decorations include the Bronze Star and the European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, among others.
After the war, Kramer sold DuPont paint and worked for General Motors overseas, putting off retirement until age 81.
The Legion of Honor was established by Napoleon in 1802, and has served as France's highest award ever since.
