York hostage situation ends with arrest

Associated Press
07/27/10 3:50 PM EDT

YORKTOWN, VA. — Authorities say a man is in custody and his ex-girlfriend is in critical condition with knife wounds after a hostage incident at a York County Walmart.

Sgt. Dennis Ivey of the York-Poquoson Sheriff's Office says 49-year-old James Perry Davis of Newport News surrendered after deputies entered the store Tuesday afternoon. The victim, whose name was not released, had been cut and was taken to a Newport News hospital. Ivey said medics described her condition as critical.

The incident occurred shortly after noon in the store's optometry department, where the woman works. The store was evacuated. Ivey says that after more than two hours of negotiations, authorities became increasingly worried about the woman and decided to enter the building.

Charges against Davis are pending.
