Authorities on Monday continued to search for the mother of a newborn girl who died after the infant was found in a field in Takoma Park.

Four detectives canvassed the neighborhood just over the District line looking for information about the mother. Police spent several hours knocking on doors, handing  out fliers and asking residents whether they had seen anything, said Prince George’s County police spokesman Henry Tippet.

Police said the mother likely needs medical attention.

“We’re just hoping that the mother comes forward for her own safety,”  Tippet said. Police have no other leads so far.

The infant, who appeared to be just a few hours old, was found in a plastic bag shortly after noon Sunday by workers clearing a field near the 6300 block of New Hampshire Avenue in Takoma Park, according to Prince George’s County police.

The workers, who were hired by a local business to clean the field near the McDonald’s restaurant, saw a black plastic trash bag that was moving in some brush or trees.

They looked inside and discovered a baby. The girl was found wrapped in a pink and yellow towel, police said.

Emergency officials performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation and took the baby to a local hospital, where she was pronounced dead a short time later. The hospital reported that the baby was Hispanic.

The field is a place were people gather to drink and use drugs, police said.

Anyone with information about the baby or her parents is asked to call the Prince George’s County Police Department’s Homicide Unit at 301-772-4925.
