D.C. police kill teenager

D.C. police officers shot and killed a teenager in Northeast Washington early Wednesday, police said.

At about 5:20 a.m., police were responding to a call of an unwanted guest on the 900 block of 21st Street NE when they were confronted by a man with a gun, a spokeswoman said. The two officers were "in imminent fear" for their lives and the lives of others and fired their service weapons, Officer Helen Andrews said. The teen, identified as 19-year-old James Broadus Miller, was taken to a hospital where he died.

The officers were placed on administrative leave with pay in accordance with departmental protocol, Andrews said.

Local men sentenced for
drug run in Nebraska

Two Silver Spring men were sentenced to several years in a Nebraska prison for delivering more than 92 pounds of marijuana through the state.

Herbert Townsend, 44, was sentenced to up to four years, and Anthony Coles, 46, was sentenced to up to five years, the Lincoln Journal Star reported.

Nebraska state troopers stopped the two men for speeding and found four bales of pot hidden in luggage.

Woman sexually assaulted
along walking path

A 33-year-old woman was attacked on a walking path adjacent to the Mount Vernon Square shopping center, near the intersection of Richmond Highway and Arlington Drive, on Tuesday. At about 7:30 a.m. a man approached her from behind, threw her to the ground, pulled down her clothing and touched her inappropriately. The victim struggled and the suspect fled. The victim suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

The suspect was described as black, in his 30s, about 5 feet 10 inches tall and weighing approximately 170 pounds. He was wearing a blue and gray hooded sweatshirt.

Cyclist rescued from beneath SUV

D.C. firefighters rescued a bicyclist from under a sport utility vehicle after an early morning crash Wednesday.

Rescue crews used hydraulics systems and airbags to lift and stabilize the vehicle to remove the man, said D.C. fire spokesman Pete Piringer.

The cyclist was struck by the SUV at about 6:30 a.m. in the area of Texas Avenue at East Capitol Street. The man, who was alert but banged up during the 20-minute rescue, was taken to a hospital in serious condition.
