A 20-year-old man was taken into custody after using a hatchet to kill another man in Gaithersburg, police said.
Claude Alexander Allen III was charged with first-degree murder in the slaying of 25-year-old Michael Phillip Harvey, court records show.
Shortly after midnight, Allen called 911 and said that he killed a man who tried to break into his residence in the 7200 block of Cliff Pine Drive. Officers found Harvey's body in a wooded area behind the home, Montgomery County police said.
During a preliminary investigation, detectives determined that the incident was not a burglary and that Allen killed Harvey. The two men knew each other, but a police spokeswoman did not know more details about the men's relationship.
The suspect is the son of Claude A. Allen, a former aide to President George W. Bush who resigned in 2006 after being cited for theft at a department store. The former Bush aide pleaded guilty later that year and was sentenced to probation, according to media reports.
