A member of President Trump's legal team insisted Sunday the president is not actually under investigation by the special counsel leading the Russia probe despite seemingly acknowledging the existence of that investigation last week.
"Let me be clear: the president is not under investigation as James Comey stated in his testimony, that the president was not the target of investigation on three different occasions," attorney Jay Sekulow said. "The president is not a subject or target of an investigation."
On Friday, Trump responded to a Washington Post story saying special counsel Robert Mueller is investigating the president for obstruction of justice in light of his firing of former FBI Director James Comey.
"I am being investigated for firing the FBI Director by the man who told me to fire the FBI Director! Witch Hunt," Trump tweeted.
Sekulow denied Trump was confirming the existence of an investigation into him.
"That tweet was in response to a Washington Post story that ran with five unnamed sources without identifying the agencies they represented saying that the special counsel had broadened out his investigation to include the president," Sekulow said. "We've had no indication of that."
