Former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, in an interviewing airing Sunday, said that it should be more difficult for students to carry guns.

“I don't know what you were like when you were in college, but my recollection of college 50 years ago is kids should just not have guns on campus,” Bloomberg said on NBC's “Meet the Press,” when asked about a recent shooting near the University of California, Santa Barbara.

Authorities said Elliot Rodger shot and killed six people in the California college town because he was frustrated that women rejected his sexual advances.

Bloomberg, who is spending $50 million of his own money to promote gun control during the 2014 midterms, said the latest mass shooting carried a clear lesson.

“The real problem here is we have too many guns in the hands of criminals, people with psychiatric problems as this guy obviously did and minors,” he said on the NBC program.

“The public understands what is happening here,” he added.
