Former Milwaukee County Sheriff David Clarke's around-the-clock home security already cost taxpayers a staggering $226,000 in 2017, according to a report Wednesday, though he will no longer receive the protection going forward.
Acting Sheriff Richard Schmidt originally said during a news conference last week that he planned to keep the security for Clarke's home due to the multitude of threats against the former sheriff and outspoken ally of President Trump. However, on Wednesday, a Schmidt spokeswoman announced that Clarke's costly security detail would be dropped, USA Today reported.
"After the initial transition, the security detail is no longer at the former sheriff's home," Fran McLaughlin, spokeswoman for Schmidt said.
Clarke resigned as Milwaukee County sheriff in August and was rumored to be taking a job in the White House. He pulled his name from consideration for a position with the Department of Homeland Security and has since taken a job with a pro-Trump super PAC.
