A 37-year-old Frederick man was found dead in Montgomery County in the trunk of his Lexus, along with cash and what is believed to be nearly a pound of marijuana.

Maryland State Police said there appeared to be trauma to John P. Ryan's body, and they are investigating his death as an apparent homicide.

Ryan, a businessman who specialized in property maintenance, was reported missing by his wife on Thursday. She told Frederick police that she last saw her husband at their home last Tuesday night and that he had left their house before she woke up the next morning.

The Frederick County Narcotics Task Force became involved in the search for Ryan at the request of the Maryland State Police. And shortly before 2:30 p.m. Monday, a U.S. Department of Homeland Security investigations agent who was part of the task force found Ryan's black 2007 Lexus LS460L. The car was in a parking lot used by multiple businesses, near the Shady Grove Metro station on the 15000 block of Somerville Drive in Derwood, state police said.

The Lexus was taken by truck to the Maryland State Police Rockville Barracks, and the car was searched. In addition to Ryan's body, police also found in the trunk an unspecified quantity of cash and a bag that contained about a pound of suspected marijuana.

Ryan traveled throughout the District, Maryland and Virginia for business, but police don't know why his car was in the lot in Derwood.

Police said they do not know what the motive is in the incident, and no arrests have been made.

"Our investigators are trying to understand who John Ryan was and what led to his death," said Maryland State Police spokesman Greg Shipley.

The cause and manner of Ryan's death will be determined by the state medical examiner's office.
