Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell is working behind the scenes to ensure that defense contractors will do their part to keep Republicans who support military spending in office.

The Wall Street Journal reports that McConnell personally delivered a pitch during a Nov. 6 fundraiser with officials from BAE Systems Inc.

A source from that fundraiser told the Wall Street Journal that McConnell specifically warned against funding Republican primary opponents.

"The main message he was pushing was: Get involved, mainly to teach those who are primarying incumbents that it is not helpful to run against incumbents who are champions for the industry," the source said.

Meanwhile, a new poll today from the Democratic firm Public Policy Polling shows McConnell within only one percentage point of his Democratic rival, Alison Lundergan Grimes, 43 percent to 42 percent -- a statistical dead heat. The poll also showed that more than 60 percent of Kentucky voters disapprove of the minority leader's job performance.
