Mitt Romney praised the "compassion and resolve" he saw in Texas in response to the devastation caused by Hurricane Harvey, calling it a "true testament to American character."

"Harvey's historic devastation has been met with historic Texas compassion and resolve," Romney tweeted Wednesday afternoon. "A true testament to American character."

The former Massachusetts governor and 2012 Republican presidential nominee joins a host of other politicians from around the country who have heaped praise and well-wishes onto those who are dealing with widespread damage and flooding.

The storm was a Category 4 hurricane when it made landfall late Friday and has impacted residents in Texas and Louisiana.

Harvey, which has dumped nearly 47 inches in some places, was downgraded to a tropical depression Wednesday evening by the National Hurricane Center, but flooding still persists. Dozens of deaths related to the storm have so far been reported.
