Olijawon Griffin thought he was going to buy marijuana from a group of teenagers he'd met in Adams Morgan. Instead, he was walking into a setup concocted by teens who wanted to steal his Helly Hanson jacket, according to authorities.
Four of those teenagers were charged as adults with armed robbery and held without bond Tuesday in the slaying of Griffin, an 18-year-old Olney resident, who later that night was fatally stabbed in the chest by a teen who was with the group who robbed him earlier, authorities said.
Court records identified the teens as Landover resident Deon Jefferson, Hyattsville resident Gary Maye, and Brentwood residents Immanuel Swann and Tyvell Smith -- all 17 years old.
A fifth teen, District Heights resident Chavez Myers, was charged as an adult on Nov. 19 with second-degree murder and assault with a deadly weapon.
Affidavits filed Tuesday by U.S. attorneys provide greater detail about the events on the night of Nov. 17, when the teens set up the fake drug deal after Griffin approached them asking for marijuana. The group had none, according to the affidavit, but Maye said he liked Griffin's jacket.
Swann, Jefferson and Maye were all present when Griffin was robbed of his jacket, hat and cellphone near the Exxon gas station on Adams Mill Road, according to the affidavit. One witness told police that Swann pulled a gun on Griffin, who later told his friends, "They had a strap to my head and robbed me."
After reuniting with his friends, Griffin walked to the Woodley Park Metro station to go home. There, he spotted the group of teens, including Jefferson, who was wearing Griffin's jacket, according to police.
When Griffin approached the group to get back his property, they attacked him and one of his friends, 18-year-old Isaac Chase.
Chase was circled by some of the teens, one of whom brandished a knife, before he was knocked down and beaten for 44 seconds on the Metro platform, according to police.
When Chase tried to stumble away, he was knocked down once more by Smith, who was seen in Metro security footage repeatedly punching, kicking and stomping Chase for another 15 seconds, according to the affidavit. One of the group then robbed Chase of his wallet and shoes.
When Griffin went to help Chase, he squared off with one of the teens while Myers snuck up behind him and stabbed him in the chest, according to authorities.
Police found a .45-caliber handgun hidden behind a locker on the Metro platform, a bloody knife on the same platform and a second knife hidden in a phone booth.
Four other teens were charged in the incident Monday in juvenile court.
