In one of the biggest political upsets of the 2014 cycle, Congressman Eric Cantor, R-Va., was defeated by Tea Party-backed candidate David Brat in the GOP primary in Virginia's 7th Congressional District. Cantor, long seen as the most likely to replace House Speaker John Boehner upon retirement, lost to Brat despite out-spending the upstart Tea Party candidate by millions of dollars.
After Senate hearings to examine President Obama's handling of the prisoner swap for Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl, the House Armed Services Committee will get a chance to question Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel on Capitol Hill today. Democrats have recently ramped up efforts to defend Obama's move, however Republicans have countered by increasing pressure on the administration.
President Obama meanwhile will be in Massachusetts today to deliver remarks at a high school graduation. The speech comes just one day after another school shooting in the country, this time, in Oregon. President Obama will head to Boston following the graduation to deliver remarks at a fundraising event.
