“MSNBC hasn’t become quite as obsessed with impeachment as CNN was with Malaysia Airlines Flight 370, but it may be getting there,” wrote Nate Silver, founder and editor-in-chief of the blog.
The data collected comes from a Lexis-Nexis search of transcripts from both networks. The search counted each use of the term “impeach” and “impeachment.” The review found MSNBC has mentioned impeachment nearly 1,000 times since Jan. 1, 2014. Fox saw 213 mentions.
In July alone, MSNBC used the words 448 times on their air, or once every 22 minutes. Just Monday, the terms were used 32 times during a single showing of MSNBC’s “The Ed Show."
Silver’s review also points out that of the 14 mentions of impeachment in the Congressional Record this session, 11 were made by Democrats.
The Democrats have raised more than $1 million from playing up the possibility that President Obama might be impeached, and have used the issue to rally their base.
NBC White House correspondent Chuck Todd — without any apparent irony — criticized the ploy Wednesday morning, telling panelists on MSNBC's "Morning Joe" that “This is playground stuff. ... I think the White House ought to be embarrassed for how they’re trying to play this.”
