National Association for the Advancement of Colored People President and Chief Executive Officer Benjamin Jealous on Monday announced the appointment of Steven Hawkins as executive vice president of the Baltimore-based organization.

Hawkins will oversee day-to-day operations in Jealous’ absence, be responsible for expanding programs and serve as chief staff liaison to the NAACP Special Contributions Fund Board of Trustees.

Hawkins most recently served as a program executive at Atlantic Philanthropies, where he directed a $60 million human rights campaign. He formerly was executive director of the National Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty.
