NASA offered some reassurance to Vice President Mike Pence who has been teased online ever since a photo of him placing a hand on a piece of space hardware that had a sign that said "DO NOT TOUCH" in big red letters.

"It was OK to touch the surface. Those are just day-to-day reminder signs. We were going to clean it anyway," NASA said in a tweet Friday afternoon. "It was an honor to host you!"

The picture was taken during Pence's visit to NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, Fla., on Thursday. It didn't take long for the image to get the meme treatment.

Pence himself had a little fun with the online teasing, tweeting that it was Sen. Marco Rubio, who was also in attendance, who put him up to the mischievous deed.

He also shared a picture of himself reaching out to touch a prickly porcupine.
