Suspect, 17, arrested for San Mateo school explosion that forced evacuation but no injuries

SAN MATEO, CALIF. — A 17-year-old boy is under arrest after police say he detonated an explosive at a California high school.

San Mateo police Lt. Mike Brunicardi said the boy is a former Hillsdale High School student. He did not know when or if the boy graduated. His name is not being released because he is a minor.

The explosion happened just after 8 a.m. Monday. The 1,200-student school was immediately evacuated and no one was injured.

Brunicardi said police initially received reports that someone was carrying a gun on campus, then subsequent calls of a blast. Brunicardi said authorities never located a gun.

Students and teachers told some media outlets that the power was shut off in the school before the blast. Brunicardi could not confirm those reports.
