President Obama conceded that he’s not sure there are enough votes in Congress to pass his preferred gun control measures, such as an assault weapons ban, which he suggested might fail due to lawmakers thinking about politics, not the children of Sandy Hook.
“Will all of them get through this Congress? I don’t know,” Obama said during a press conference today, after noting that he supports “an assault weapons ban that’s meaningful” and regulating high-capacity magazines.
“Members of Congress are I think going to have a debate and examine their own conscience,” Obama also said. He suggested that if legislators “were as saddened as I was” by the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School last month, then “we’re going to have to come up with answers that set politics aside.”
