President Obama has canceled Halloween festivities at the White House, according to a statement from the White House Press Office.

Obama is expected to travel to New Jersey today to view the wreckage from the wake of “Superstorm” Sandy with Governor Christie and won’t return to the White House until this evening.

Since 2009, President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama have hosted local children and children of military families for trick-or-treating at the White House, together with other events.

Last week, Obama joked on Jay Leno’s Tonight Show that this year there would be “candy for everybody” who showed up at the White House for trick-or-treating since it was an election year.
