President Obama and first lady Michelle Obama will attend a memorial service Tuesday in Johannesburg, South Africa for Nelson Mandela, a White House official said.

The memorial service will take place at Johannesburg's Soccer City stadium, which holds nearly 100,000 spectators. The stadium was the site of Mandela’s last public appearance — at the closing ceremony for the 2010 World Cup.

"He achieved more than could be expected of any man," Obama said Thursday after learning of Mandela’s death. "He belongs to the ages."

The White House late Saturday did not provide further details of the president’s schedule for next week.

Former Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush are also expected to travel to South Africa to pay tribute to Mandela.

The South African leader's funeral is scheduled for Sunday, Dec. 15, in his hometown of Qunu.
