Obama grants 153 commutations, 78 pardons

President Obama on Monday granted 153 commutations and 78 pardons.

According to the White House, it is the most individual acts of clemency — 231 total — granted in one day by a U.S. president.

The president has now commuted the sentences of 1,176 individuals, including 395 life sentences.

White House counsel Neil Eggleston said the move signifies Obama's "continued commitment to exercising his clemency authority through the remainder of his time in office."

Obama has just 32 days left in office and has faced pressure from criminal justice reform advocates to shorten as many sentences as possible before President-elect Donald Trump takes office.

Of the 153 individuals granted a shorter prison sentence, most were sentenced for non-violent drug-related crimes. However, 42 had a firearm-related offense as well, such as "use of a firearm in relation to a drug trafficking offense."

Though Obama added 78 pardons to his eight-year total — now 148 — he still trails previous presidents including George W. Bush, who pardoned 189 people, and Bill Clinton, who pardoned 396.

The offenses for those who received a pardon from Obama range from bank fraud to marijuana distribution. Just six had a firearm-related offense, such as possession of a stolen firearm.

"Over the last eight years, President Obama has given a second chance to over 1,100 inmates who have paid their debt to society. Our work is ongoing and we look forward to additional announcements from the President before the end of his term," Deputy Attorney General Sally Yates said in a statement.
