Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley has named a new labor secretary.

Leonard Howie, previously a deputy secretary at the Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation, will take over Oct. 8, according to O'Malley's office. Howie is currently working for the state's human resources department.

Howie succeeds Scott R. Jenson, who has served as the agency's interim secretary since May, when Alexander M. Sanchez stepped down as secretary to become chief of staff to Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake.

"There's nothing more important for a family than a good job, and there is no better way to expand opportunity, to grow our economy, and to strengthen and grow the ranks of an increasingly diverse and upwardly mobile middle class than by creating jobs," O'Malley said. "We are confident in Leonard's ability to connect Marylanders with the jobs and skills they need to compete."
