One-third of Americans say President Obama is the worst president since World War II, slightly eclipsing former President George W. Bush for the “honor,” according to a new poll.

The survey from Quinnipiac University found that 33 percent of respondents believe Obama is the worst president in the last 70 years, while 28 percent gave Bush the label.

In contrast, 35 percent said that former Republican President Ronald Reagan was the best commander in chief. Former President Bill Clinton was the top Democrat, with 18 percent saying he was their favorite occupant of the White House.

The findings are yet another example of how similarly Americans view Obama and Bush during the same points in their presidencies. Obama ran as the anti-Bush, making the poll all the more troubling for Democrats.

“Over the span of 69 years of American history and 12 presidencies, President Barack Obama finds himself with President George W. Bush at the bottom of the popularity barrel," said Tim Malloy, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Poll.

When asked, 45 percent of respondents said the country would be better off had Republican Mitt Romney defeated Obama in 2012 -- 38 percent said the U.S. would be worse off.

Also, 54 percent of Americans said the Obama administration is not competent in running the government. The president’s overall job approval remains at 40 percent, the poll found.
