An Inconvenient Truth: The Earth is Cooling

Examiner Editorial
-
December 23, 2008

The “scientific consensus” that Al Gore and his fellow global warming alarmists rely upon to force radical changes in how Americans live and work is being unraveled by Mother Nature. In addition to the recent freak snowstorms in Malibu, New Orleans and Las Vegas, Arctic ice is expanding this year - not shrinking - and there were 115 record-low temperatures reported in the U.S. in October, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Despite rising carbon dioxide levels, the Earth has actually been cooling – not warming – since 1998, when the warming trend peaked in conjunction with heightened sunspot activity. It appears that 2008, the National Climatic Data Center now says, will go down as the coldest year in a decade.

“For how many years must the planet cool before we begin to understand that the planet is not warming?” asked Dr. David Gee, chairman of the 2008 International Geological Congress’ science committee. That’s an excellent question for President-elect Barack Obama, who promised mandatory caps on carbon emissions and a new international global warming treaty. After meeting with Gore recently, Obama proclaimed: “The time for delay is over; the time for denial is over. We all believe what the scientist have been telling us for years.”

Which scientists? Does Obama believe more than 650 current and former members of the U.N. Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) who are now publicly questioning the non-scientist Gore’s major premise? Or Norwegian Nobel physicist Ivar Giaever, who declared himself a global warming skeptic, as did Dr. Joanne Simpson, the first woman in the world to receive a Ph.D. in meteorology? Or the scientists who point out that “100 percent” of the 20th century global warming signal comes from man-made “adjustments” made to a computer model at NASA’s Goddard Institute?

There is no scientific consensus that human activity is causing global warming. The IPCC’s own climate change models predicted rising temperatures for this year, but those actually recorded fall short of the predictions. Yet Gore and his fellow global warming zealots apparently think the rest of us are sufficiently gullible to believe that the current cooling trend “actually illustrates how fast the world is warming,” as an AP reporter put it recently. In the absence of credible scientific evidence of global warming as a man-made problem, Obama’s plans to impose draconian climate control measures like those found in the failed Lieberman-Warner cap-and-trade proposal are not only unnecessary, they’re likely to leave millions of Americans out in the cold.

Cool to Global Warming

Dec 23, 2008

Amen. I have always been skeptical of the theory that global warming is being driven by human activity. We humans have no idea of the ultimate economic cost of CO2 mitigation to the world. If everyone had to shell out that dough today, their views might change, especially given the current economic environment. CO2 mitigatiion to stop global warming is not only expensive but Quixotic.

how convenient to print this tripe during first cold snap of DC's winter. Glaciers all over the world are melting after over 10K yrs; please explain this fact away.

Psh..please. Tell that to the polar bear whose drowning cause he cant find any ice to rest on. If your life is too important to do things that help this Earth, then you dont deserve to be here. I'm 17 and my generation is inheriting whatever your generation leaves. So please stop being "skeptical" and just get something done for a change.

It's entertaining to see comments from the "sufficiently gullible". Did they dispute the facts of this opinion piece: NOAA facts; statements and opinions of the IPCC; the Norwegian Nobel physicist? Of course not -- too much work. The intellectually immature have succumbed to brainwashing, then can offer only their emotional outrage when you dispute their Gore-Buffoonery dogma.

climate vs. weather

Dec 23, 2008

Climate: the composite or generally prevailing weather conditions of a region, as temperature, air pressure, humidity, precipitation, sunshine, cloudiness, and winds, throughout the year, averaged over a series of years. Weather: The state of the atmosphere at a given time and place, with respect to variables such as temperature, moisture, wind velocity, and barometric pressure. It was cold and windy yesterday. That's the weather. The climate of a region is over a series of years. Global warming is even longer. Will there be blips in the warming? Of course. The sun goes through cycles too which affects the global temperature. There are 11 year cycles and others that are longer. Over the long haul though, the earth has been warming. It is not a liberal conspiracy.

The earth is warming regardless of the cold weather. Is it manmade? I am not sure but the debate rages on. If we are contributing even a little bit, isn't it our responsibility to take steps to reduce our contribution?

Look at the brighter side. Tina Fey was named entertainer of the year for her impersonation of Palin. The inconned venient truth is its freaking cold outside now! Around 17 degrees. I hope on January 20th it is at least this or below zero. Maybe them we can have hysteria in the press again about global warming the new yoga, meditation, swami, cult, religious, experience and sell it on why of course PBS. We can have the host withthe most Dr. Wayne Dyer Buddha in recarnation as the salesman. A president of the United States has to do better than listening to a former Vice president hawking his wares. Heck even Clinton, likes the hot money in the gulf.

Pentagon Is Alarmed about Global Warming Even If You're Not

Dec 23, 2008

So let's stop worrying about burning fossil fuels? What is it that scares the right wing about this issue? Are they afraid we're going to finally make fuel-efficient cars? Save energy? Use renewable sources? It saving energy a communist plot? Global warming, climate change, whatever you want to call SCARES THE PENTAGON because IT WILL HAVE AN IMPACT on farming, economies, and human misery. Do some research.

These activities; excessive colder temperatures; are byproducts of global warming. People should do their homework before they comment about climate physics. Changing temperature; either up or down; is inclusive of global warming trends. Compare this to the shrinkoing ice of the polar caps and explain that with this cooling effort in mind as well. Cool to Global Warming

Dec 23, 2008

We can all stipulate that on average the global temperature is increasing as a long term trend. These trends have fluctuated over millions of years. That part seems to be proven scientifically. The primary point of the article is that there is no scientific evidence about the linkage between global warming and human activity. It is only a theory! It has not been proven and most of the press is pushing it as a fact. It is a theory based entirely on faith and cannot be proven or disproven. I suspect it is another "feel good" project where we can think globally and act locally. Unfortunately the costs will not be voluntary and we will be taxed (directly or indirectly) to achieve this goal that probably can't be accomplished anyway. Why can't we solve social security instead?

I am delighted to see a thoughtful challenge to the "conventional wisdom" of climate change. We need more reality checks like this one.

Dec 23, 2008

All this article says in defense of the earth cooling is that record lows have been lower in the last few years. But, that doesn't mean that average temps. aren't going up. We could just be experiencing more weather extremes. I agree with jboy - how do you explain the glaciers suddenly melting after thousands of years if not that the earth is warmer?

Dec 23, 2008

Albert: Huh? I don't see the "thoughtful challenge" by the writer. Just looks like the same anti-global warming propoganda to me.

TRUTH

Dec 23, 2008

OK BOYS AND GIRLS It's time for a science class. 101 just because it might be snowing in the hill above malibu does not mean globle cooling. in fact it proves globle warming by the weather extriems more violent storms. just waight untill summer we could have the heat wave of the century. don't de fooled by mother nature and don't forget about the fact's. 2008 was cooler than the privious years but still one of the top 10 hotest and the ice is still melting. this is another trick by the Bush politics and the oil and coal idustry

straws

Dec 23, 2008

The writer is grasping at straws. It's just more republican rhetoric on something they are afraid to confront.

Dec 23, 2008

The politicians have no business involving themselves in this matter of scientific inquiry. Gore has banked on the support of the PC university to advance his social engineering scheme. Fortunately it has not panned out as the competent dissent is mounting.

Dec 23, 2008

IF cooling can be demonstrate warming, then warming can demonstrate cooling, right?? Makes about as much sense. A drought really shows just how much it has rained. This is the FOURTH such cycle we have gone through and EACH time, there has been a "panic" of sorts, but none like now. All that COLD air rushing down from Canada is NOT a result of global warming!! SHEESH!

Dec 23, 2008

A simple test for one of the claims of the alarmists. Put some ice in a container and fill it with water. When the ice melts the water level is lower. There would be no seaside flooding or islands disappearing under the waves because frozen water is less dense than liquid water.

Ernie

Dec 23, 2008

I think I am starting to understand this Global Warming. If it gets warmer, it is an indication for alarm, and if it gets colder, that also points to increased Global Warming. I was just wondering, how will we know if there is an impending Ice Age? By the way, what about the Global Warming period in the medieval era when the Vikings lived on Greenland? Why did the polar bear population rise from 5,000 in 1950 to 25,000 today? I'm still confused.

Warming or cooling has always depended on the time frame. 10 years back it started cooling. 60 years back it began warming. 300 years back it was cooling. 1200 years back it was warming. The Earth pretty much warms and cools on its own. High Priest Al Gore and his co-religionists, however, freak every time you question their Nature God, their lifestyle commandments, and their view of the apocalypse.

TheHistorian

Dec 24, 2008

Ask jboy to explain the Middle Ages, when world wide temps were 5-7 degrees C hotter. Also, ask him why there is more Arctic sea ice now than for the last 10 years. I get tired of people who read yesterday's news at the bottom of bird cages and believe it. It is also interesting that people like James Hansen will make comments about people being criminalized and standing trial for their beliefs, but he should skate on his. Typical liberal arrogance.

An Inexact Science that Requires Serious Attention

Dec 25, 2008

This is an inexact science where scientists are looking at new information all the time. It would take supreme arrogance to dismiss the whole issue. This month the US Geological Survey issued a report two years in the making. One person involved in the study described the threat as "a low-probability but high-risk scenario." The USGS study estimates that, based on ice sheet melting, seas levels may rise by as much as four feet by the end of this century.

science a religion?

Dec 25, 2008

Looking at the editorial and the comments, it almosts looks like science is a kind of religion. Some people believe the science of global warming and some don't. The ones who don't most assuredly appear to despise Al Gore, one of the messengers.

mick

Dec 25, 2008

Every one of the people supporting global warming are making statements like "The earth is warming regardless of the cold weather" or "we know the earth is warming". But every one of those people doesn't even know why it is ridiculous to be so certain about what is happening to climate. We don't know diddly, and to believe we can predict the earth's climate is the height of hubris.

Examiner Editorial on Earth Cooling

Dec 27, 2008

Neither Al or his clack really believe what they preach. If they truly believed the earth would soon be "toast" they would live it. What if we all lived our lives the way Al Gore does, what would happen according to him?

Yo Ebony, have you ever tried talking to a polar bear?

Robert G.

Dec 29, 2008

Real scientist don't anticipate much effect from carbon dioxide at all, much less "increasingly critical". Atmospheric carbon dioxide's greenhouse effect is logarithmic -- the first half of pre-Industrial Revolution-level effect was achieved by less than 20 parts per million, then needing the addition of 250 ppmv more to achieve the same warming increment to reach pre-IR effect and it will take a massive increase to repeat the dose again. (The "how much" depends on total sensitivity estimates but, utilizing A Field Guide to the Atmosphere (Houghton, 1983)'s commonly cited 7 K greenhouse effect for 300 ppmv (presumably from Kondratyev & Moskalenko but the origin of this common figure is obscure) then quadrupling pre-IR levels to 1120 ppmv can deliver a mere 1.71 K warming in total -- since there's already alleged to have been 0.7 K that leaves just 1 kelvin potential for adding another 740 ppmv to the current 380 ppmv.)

With a little research you can find out it has also warmed on Mars as well as 4 other places in our solar system. Please explain how man is causing that.Polar bears didn't become extinct during the mid evil warm period when the vikings lived for 500 years in Greenland. They farmed, raised sheep and goats, grew rye, barley, potatoes and more. The world got a lot cooler and the vikings could not survive there.History will always tell us about the future.Climate will always change. It is not supposed to remain constant.
