What's Kennedy Done to Earn NY Senate Seat?

One of the most essential principles that united this nation's founders was an absolute antipathy to hereditary rule. Not just kings but hereditary nobility also were scorned by Washington, Madison, Franklin and Jefferson alike. An aristocracy posed such a danger to representative democracy that Madison (in Federalist 39) warned explicitly against any situation in which “a handful of tyrannical nobles, exercising their oppressions by a delegation of their powers, might aspire to the rank of republicans and claim for their government the honorable title of republic.”

The subject arises because of the increasing likelihood that Caroline Kennedy will be appointed to the Senate seat from New York that would be vacated if Hillary Clinton is confirmed as Secretary of State. Kennedy might be a fine person, but she has spent almost her entire life shunning public attention, public service, and public scrutiny. Yet, because she is a Kennedy — American political royalty — she has risen to the top of the list for a seat not to be won in a public campaign but to be handed to her on a platter.

This prospect should rankle all small-“r’” republicans. It is one thing for a Kennedy, or a Bush, or a Gore, or a Dodd to carry on their family traditions of public office by competing for public support with other candidates on at least a nominally level playing field. By name alone they enjoy advantages that would give pause to some of the founders — but at least they subject themselves to the consent of the governed. But for somebody to trade on family name alone, without obvious qualifications, is to take dynasticism too far. New York Gov. David Paterson should strenuously resist the pressure to appoint Kennedy to the job, and instead choose somebody with an actual, extensive record in public life.

Poor fellow Blagoyevich (i hope did not mispronounce)has said on the tape what they all think to themself. Everything and everybody for sale, especially if the president-elect wants it. It's sad. My country, we're you heading to?...

She has demonstrated common sense and good judgment and both of them are needed and will work in Congress.

Democrats seem to like people with no credentials. Why is this a surprise? At least, as far as I know, she isn't a tax cheat like Rangell and Franken. I doubt she is hiding $90,000 in a freezer somewhere...though you never know.

What Credentials Did Bush Have?

Governor of Texas? Don't make me laugh. Failed businessman? That's a good one. The son of George H.W. Bush? BINGO!

Bill

Hey Bill -- this will be an appointment, not an election. Moron. Read the newspaper. Second, fine. So what credential did W. Bush have to be GOVERNOR OF TEXAS??

This Will be an Appointment

The Senate seat will be an appointment, not an election. Don't confuse running for office with being qualified for the job. You guys belly ache endlessly about Obama's "credentials." He won the election, didn't he? You can't have it both ways.

IT IS ABOUT TIME FOR THE KENNEDYS TO GO AWAY EN MASSE, IT WAS ALWAYS RIDICULOUS FOR THIS WEALTHY YANKEE-IRISH FAMILY TO PLAY THE F.D.R. "I AM FOR THE LITTLE MAN" BALONEY . IN TRUTH THE ONLY DEMOGRAPHIC KEEPING THIS FAMILY POLITICAL FORTUNES ALIVE ARE URBAN READERS OF PEOPLE MAGAZINE MOSTLY WOMEN ENFATUATED WITH CELEBRITY, SOME OLDER BLACKS WHO WANT TO KEEP THE PROTEST SIXTIES GOING ON FOREVER AND THE NORTHEAST ESTABLISHMENT MEDIA. AS FAR AS WHAT SHE "BRINGS" THERE IS NOT MUCH , BUT OBAMA THE DARLING CANDIDATE DOES NOT BRING MUCH EITHER. HELL WITH HIS BACKGROUND AND ASSOCIATIONS, HE COULD NOT PASS A SECURITY CHECK TO BE A CAPITOL POLICEMAN.

The Dems were up in arms about Sarah Palin's lack of "experience" but it's a tiresome fact that they have different standards if you're a Republican. Nothing wrong with a member of the same family running, as long as they are elected and not appointed. George W was elected TWICE. Can anyone imagine what would happen if Jeb Bush got appointed to his seat rather than running??

Good grief! You ask "what has she done"? She was born a Kennedy! Therefore, she is "entitled" - can't you understand royalty?
