The tea bag movement is more indicative of our country's failed educational system more than anything else. A simple civics 101 course would easily explain to these idiots that they DO in fact have representation in the government, there just isn't enough of "them" to win. Couple that with the fact that 99 percent of the people getting involved in these protests will see their taxes decrease and you've got a recipe for stupid pie. The author wants to talk of "comity" yet I am sure watches and absorbs most of their news form Fox, the most biased and unbalance news reporting in the country. This "opinion", just like the tea bag "movement" is nothing more than coordinated whining from a select few ideologues on the right. You lost get over it. Come up with some new ideas and try to win some elections without fear mongering and we'll see what you've got to offer, but right now you've got nothin'.

Spot on.
Expand "comity" to responses from House and Senate Representatives (in my case, Hodes and Shaheen). In all cases, these have been mindless form letters which claim credit, answer nothing and prove that no one is listening.

DC's smug comment is that of an arrogant lefto-fascist koolaid drinker. He has been duped into beleiving that his outlay is going to be less in supporting the outrageous spending of this governemnt, He doesnt realize that while $5 in being handed to him as tax welfare, the governemnt is stealing his wallet, and he is actually smiling like a useful idiot. We may have representatives in governemnt but they have gone wild and forgotton why they were elected

@DC: This "tea bag" movement can see beyond its nose to the bill coming due for the empty promises of its leaders. I don't know what economics 101 class you took but it certainly didn't include the dictum "there's no such thing as a free lunch."
And as to comity; you simply prove the author's point with your derision. Civility is due the electorate from its governors no matter which party wins. It's not just good manners, it's how 'civilization' endures.

yeah, let's go back to the good old days of George W Bush and a Republican Congress. Those guys knew fiscal discipline, didn't they?
No Child Left Behind, Homeownership Society, Medicare Prescription Drugs, Farm Bills, Transportation Bill.
Oh yeah, don't forget all those presidential vetoes on spending bills.
Please, George W Bush was a disaster as president
Ralph Gizzip
May 5, 2009
Mr. Danelli, we on the Right never claimed President Bush was fiscal conservative. It was our biggest complaint during his Presidency. So President Obama's "Hope and Change" is to be even more fiscally irresponsible than Bush. The Congressional Budget Office even says so. But I'm sure that's much more to your liking.
"The problem with Socialism is that eventually you run out of other peoples money."
Look At Sacramento
May 5, 2009
California voters face a raft of initiatives placed on the ballot by the legislature and the governor. Collectively, they have failed to address the budget, and the Golden State slips into the abyss, financially. Political partisanship, agendas, political correctness and plain stupidity leave real problems un-addressed. The federal government performs the same way, poorly. A quick look around the parking lot at Home Depot quickly confirms that the fed has totally abandoned it's responsibility to control the borders. Alas, most people are just asking representatives in Sacramento and Washington to just do their job, not too much to ask, really.

Ok Mr. DC, its your opinion and you are free to air it, so far! Now, if you believe it so heartedly put your name on it. Looks like everyone else did!
Comity?
May 5, 2009
Going back to the editorial - I'm stunned that the authors felt the need to define "comity" to the Democratic leadership, after 8 Conservative years of defining opposition to Administration policy as immoral and potentially traitorous. There is either a convenient memory loss about the recent political climate, or a hypocracy that changes the rules depending on who has the ball.
The current leadership has decided not to endorse a political protest organized by the other party; given the lack of resonance from the protest, it looks like the judgement was correct. Why give the story legs by commenting on it? By the same standard, the nut-job lefties who wave placards in the back of Congressional hearing rooms are also ignored by the leadership.

What "oppressive tax hikes"? Over 95% of us will get a tax cut. And surely you can't oppose Pres. Obama's intent to make the wealthy companies that take advantage of overseas tax havens pay their fait share of taxes, can you? It's time that the fat cats who grew even fatter under Bush's 8-year reign of error pay at least as large a percentage in taxes as ordinary wage earners.

The vitriol from DC resident and the rest of you libs only serves to enflame the debate. Please take your marxist socialist ideals elsewhere if you can not politely debate the issues facing this nation. This country once stood for individual rights and responsibility(something the left has long forgotten). If you had taken the time to attend a TEA party you would have soon realized what a diverse cross section of America was represented. People from all segments of our society attended to voice their concerns for reckless bloated spending, the hijacking of our nation by the special interests in DC (are you listening DC resident?) and on Wall Street. Most TEA party participants realize that actions have consequences. The so called bailout of Obama, Pelosi and Reid will bankrupt this nation. Mean spirited? I believe DC Resident and BLRohrer have clearly demonstrated which side of the debate the "mean spirited" occupy.
A Polite Discussion?

"Arrogance" "disdainful" "condescension". These are probably not the best words to use to describe your opponents, if you are interested in a polite discussion.

To BL Rohrer - How about Couric, Lauer, Garafalo, Olbermann, Matthews, Blitzer, Williams, Begala, Carville, coupled with the dimwits Reid, Pelosi, Frank, Rangel, Conyers, Jackson-Lee, Waxman, Kennedy and the rest?
The socialist Democrats (also known as Progressives) got us into this mess and they are succeeding in making it a whole lot worse

DC Resident's comments reflect a typical "koolaid drinker". The Tea Parties are NOT based on the original event that coined the name. The representatives ARE NOT representing the people and doing them grave disservice. Also, the debt they are passing on to our children, grand children and great grandchildren will be devastating. Those that will have to pay this haven't even been born in most cases....they did not have a chance to vote on this or the people who are basically robbing them of their future income.

The first comment is a perfect exanple of your editorial. The poster wouldn't discuss politics nor commonly known facts with me even though as a senior citizen I have lived through them, For instance he and many others would not believe I attended grade school in a rural school on week days and on Sunday attended Sunday school and religious services in the same building. It still stands today as a historical national monument on Hazel Dell Road, south of Higginsville Mo. state higheay # Thirteen Those years were in the 1940's.

DC resident must be on the public dole, or working for the government (ahh but then I REPEAT MYSELF)
Tea baggers want the filthy socialists out of the way, and frankly the socialists are in power simply because of the dumbing down of the population. Socialism doesn't work, and never has, because the government eventually runs out of other peoples money.
The saddest thing that we now face, is that good and true men and women have gone to war to defend the like of DC resident, these people died so that those trashing the country might live.

If enough of the 4th of July Tea Parties are "open carry" events then some serious publicity should be generated. Please consider that when you are planning your next tea party.

I love these comments like, "What are they complaining about, 95% of them are getting a tax break!" Tell me, were all of you so welcoming of a tax break when Bush had his? Oh no, that was belittled as HARMFUL to the economy by the left. But Obama does it, LOOK, it's a great thing!
Doesn't matter if people get a small tax break now, if the huge spending numbers translate into requisite higher taxes in the future, and more government control NOW. THAT is what these people are standing up to, and people like this DC character are so blinded by anyone saying anything against Dear Leader that he can't even see the obvious.

The '95% of people will see a tax break' is a big BS campaign slogan. We're seeing major increases in entitlements, people that pay zero taxes will get an "earned income" check (entitlement)and the middle class is going to pay the hardest. The tea parties (at least in California) are about increases in taxes on gas, utilites, phones, sales tax, etc in order to make up for the expensive spending programs by both local and national governments. So you maybe you'll see $13 a week, but it will cost you $200 a month in additional taxes for everything you do. They're even taxing the grocery bags in Los Angeles! It's a joke, and coming soon to your neighborhood under the 8 trillion spending/stimulus program.

"95% of people will see a tax break" is incorrect. There is NO tax break! Your tax bill isn't reduced; the amount you owe hasn't changed...yet...believe me that will change! The only thing that has changed is just your withholding. They're fronting part of your own, theoretical tax refund early...dribbled out. You don't owe any less; you'll be recieving less of your own money back when you next file your taxes. Look it up irs.gov. Oh, you might also look at the CBO's figure of public debt as a % of GDP...Who exactly will be paying for all this when our public debt load hits 82% of GDP...just the rich? Seriously, get a calculator and do your own math. Everyone will be paying more.

The emotions that are motivating the Tea Party protesters are so much more than just a concern over higher taxes and Washington’s futile attempt to spend the country into prosperity and borrow its way out of endless debt. Never have conservatives been more afraid of our own government’s true intentions and its fidelity to our constitution, and consequently there is a great fear that the republic itself may be in danger. An historical analogy would be that we sense that we may be moving from the era of Res Publica and entering Imperium Romanum with most being totally unaware of it.

Vito, if you really believe "Bush" spending was a disaster (the CONGRESS spends the money, DUMMY) and the DEMOCRAT Congress pushed republican congressional spending with threats and the press - was bad - then 4 times the full 8 years (2,920 days) of spending in only 100 days can't be good now, can it ? YOU THINK WE'RE FOOLED ?
lol
That is spending at 120 times the rate - ONE HUNDRED AND TWENTY TIMES MORE SPENDING PER DAY.
That's perhaps a bit too much demonrat control.

Disgusted Oregon Democrat - forget even the tax part, we will all pay in pricing of everything we buy, and double the gasoline price, electric, natural gas, propane and oil heating in the eastboard - all the food products, restaurant and chain prices, travel, car plates, you name it !
They HAVE TO collect from everyone - it's called HIDDEN TAXES.
Our standard of living will drop, and the rich will be off to their trillions dollar parachute rides - AS WE ALREADY SEE.

What started the deficits was a change in policy in the 80's. That policy was to promote outsourcing. As jobs left the country, a huge decrease in tax revenue coincided. At future tea parties, I would like to see protests requesting plugging tax loop holes for companies that outsource. Bring manufacturing back to the U.S.

What I meant to illustrate was the flat-out disinformation that most are sucking up as a "gee aren't we lucky" benefit. I'm bailing from what in my opinion is the party of mind-numbing, irresponsible, seeminly unconstitutional, most likely when we dig deep enough, perhaps even criminal...certainly unethical behavior. I'm disgusted with both parties and yes, I was at the April 15th Tea Party. You bet I'll be at the July 4th! As government continues to go from being mostly annoying to flat-out destructive to our free market system, I'm done sitting by. Support and defend The Constitution. Not to worry; I totally "get it".

To all you libs:
The purpose of the tea parties was to protest the spending that is occuring at all levels of government anb by both parties, and the necessary tax increases and other hidden taxes that will be needed to support these increases. Yes we do have representation however, if our representatives don't listen to us, then we really are not represented.

DC's typical inside the beltway condescending arrogance is exactly what is going to eventually hang this sort of fool. When they realize how out of touch they area with most of the country, it will be too late. He or she is the type of person Senator Chuck Grassley should have been talking about when he said: "Apologize to the American People and COMMIT SUICIDE".
Grassldy left out the real closing part of his comment which was "before the American People get their hands on you".
