Gangster government gave Chrysler to the UAW

Examiner Editorial
-
May 8, 2009

Give President Obama credit – he at least made the proverbial offer Chrysler’s secured creditors couldn’t refuse. The way Obama strong-armed creditors who rightfully expected to be treated justly under the law was right out of Juan Peron’s playbook. Like the Argentinian strong man, Obama muscled the owners and creditors out of a productive private company and gave it to union leaders, who will then fill his campaign coffers in gratitude for his generosity. The Examiner’s Michael Barone – who has forgotten more about American government and politics than most Washington political experts know – was correct to dub Obama’s Chrysler heist “an episode of Gangster Government.”

Forget what anybody in the White House or what is left of the Chrysler executive corps claims to the contrary because the UAW effectively owns the company now, holding 55 percent of its stock. True, the union doesn’t get an explicit controlling majority of the board of directors, but who needs that when you’ve got the White House guaranteeing your work and the U.S. Treasury Department making sure you never have to worry about the bottom line. UAW President Ron Gettelfinger’s place in Big Labor’s Hall of Fame is now secure. He found a sugar daddy with an endless supply of cash. So UAW members and retirees can keep right on drawing those pay and benefits so excessively generous they made it impossible for the old Chrysler to compete with Toyota and Honda.

Contrasting mightily with the Pennsylvania Avenue Gang’s thuggery is the quiet confidence of Ford Motor Company’s president and CEO, Allan Mullaly. He had the foresight three years ago to strengthen his firm’s cash and credit reserves in anticipation of the inevitable decline of auto sales. He also invested heavily in more fuel efficient products at just the right time for market conditions. When GM and Chrysler headed hats-in-hand to Washington last fall, Mullaly said Ford didn’t want a bailout and then watched quietly as his two cross-town rivals committed corporate suicide. Now Ford is positioned strongly to be the last great American car company. With a guy like that at the helm, it’s enough to make people who love American free enterprise go out and buy a new Ford.

The writer of this article obviously has an ax to grind. As I broke down the type of words he used to convey his personal thoughts, as an editorial, I began to think he missed out on something and is now vetting his anger in a public manner. Get a grip!

this article is dead wrong...

United Auto Workers will sell its 55% stake in the reorganized Chrysler as soon as possible to fund a trust that will cover retirees' health care costs, UAW President Ron Gettelfinger said....

Its articles like this that scare the American people... even though it is wrong, sound like the editor is really angry, or just don't get it... He needs to report the news, not is dead wrong opinion... He doesn't sound very AMERICAN to me.. We need to back OUR AMERICAN WORKERS , not cut them down... BUY AMERICAN! BE AMERICAN!

I suggest you all read a little history before rushing to judgment about the author. History proves this type of government move leads to bad, bad things for all of us.

Cobraguy95

IT'S AN EDITORIAL, NOT A NEWS ARTICLE! THAT'S WHY IT FEATURES OPINION! And, of course the UAW will sell its controlling stake in Chrysler. After all, Gettelfinger said so.

Since 1987, I've purchased 35 Chrysler vehicles. Both company & personal. There will be no more. Same goes for GM.

As financial instruments mature, I am moving assets from any entity that has accepted, or been forced to accept, taxpayer funded bailouts.

Our "no government work" policy will remain in effect. And will now include sub-contract work.

I'd rather lose - than be a winner, selected, and controlled, by the cold, dead, hand of government. ANY government.

As a company owner we used to standardize on Dodge vehicles. Now that the Obama regime has nationalized Chrysler and handed it over to the UAW as political payment we will never do business with them again. Our local Ford dealer is grateful for our business and Ford deserves our support. We do not need to protest or picket, we just need to vote with our wallets.

When the people, the true government, do not accept their obligations and responsibilities, then you have the socialist/communist barry soetoro aka, whatever, now dictating what will occur. This is only the beginning. The future plans of the NWO and the OWG are to remove the wealth from the people and put them into subjugation that will be the example for the entire world thereby creating what the elitists have had in mind for centuries!

I thought the article great! Obama and his administration flaunted the rule of law for political gain - and further jeopardized America's manufacturing sector in the process.

For all those complaining above, what ever happened to your fondness for Truth to Power - or is that only reserved for when a Republican is in the Oval Office?

This article is spot on. The thuggery extends to every initiative that has been brought forth by this Administration.
I didn't get what I wished for, but those who wished for change, must be wondering 'what have we unleashed'?

"Buy American"? What's American? Are you American? YOU are an IMPORT...unless, of course, you are of Native American descent. Buy American? Make something that is worth me buying and not a piece of junk, and I will. I will take an Audi over a Chevy any day. BY THE WAY: the day will come when you regret ever voting for our Conman in Chief.

This article is Spot ON;

Obama & Democrats SAID they wanted "Redistribution of Wealth", and they are doing it. After all, they one the election.

People need to wake up and realize the Government under Obama is crooked, just like Chicago Politics.

Well, at least when Dodge is finally run into the ground and takes its place in history next to Nash & Hudson, the lazy, unproductive, undereducated, overcompensated UAW leeches will have no one but themselves to blame. After all, it's THEIR company now!

Good luck, you useless lazy turds!

It is encouraging to see the Obama administration's gangsterism called for what it is in a mainstream publication. Kudos to Mr. Barone and the Examiner. I am afraid this is only the beginning of his agenda. Mr. Obama speaks of appointing judges who have "empathy". We can see from his "empathy" for the UAW and the cash they gave him, he really means "favoritism", at the expense of the law.

He broke the law to make the deal work. The investment companies, whose customers had invested in Chrysler, were forced to take deals that were illegal.

Now some are in court suing the federal gov. The UAW better sell quick LMAO.

Obama and the Democrats will do whatever is necessary to make this an one party Nation, controlled by the Democrats. They intend to install an Third World Socialist Welfare State!

May 9, 2009

...And that leaves one wondering who in their right mind would buy the UAW's interest in Chrysler? Can't get a 'fair' price on the open market? Idea! Let's have the US 'temporarily' purchase the interest until capitalists come to their senses and are willing to pay said 'fair' price. Gee, I guess Obama won't be getting out of the car business afterall.

Yep, let's all support American workers.
Last I heard, Fords were still made by Americans. Toyotas are assembled in Kentucky and Indiana -- Americans.

Let Chrysler go the way of American Motors and Studebaker.

Anyone who thinks the Chrysler deal is in support of the American worker needs to have their head examined. This is one of the scariest actions ever undertaken by a President and his henchmen. Never before as the US government acted so brazenly against the rule of law in this country. The implications of this move are massive and anyone that doesn't see it should read the following:

re: Jeb:

Saying that selling the stocks makes up for stealing them in the first place is just plain stupid.

JohnR

May 9, 2009

The language used is extreme, but the basic point is correct.

I can't imagine why anyone thinks a corporation 90% "owned" by Unions and Govt will be viable. Look at what this combination has done to our K-12 public school system.

This just delays the inevitable total collapse of Chrysler. But in the meantime...taxpayer funded bailouts and prop-ups will continue.

Domer88

May 9, 2009

The only "American" cars I will buy from now on are Fords or Hondas, Nissans, Toyotas, or BMWs made in US factories. I won't ever buy a UAW car. Never. They are fellow-travelers with Obama seeking to steal what they can't earn.

Bob DiNubila

May 9, 2009

I don't see why there is surprise about the Chrysler bailout. I was a mistake from the start, as appears the case with the bailouts in general. The result so far is Chrysler is in bankruptcy court where it should have been in the first place, without our money. GM looks not to far behind as well some bailed out banks. Strong arming the secured loan investors is also no surprise. The nerve of them to think the law would be obeyed. Did anyone remember Obama is from Mob town Chicago, the home of crime and extortion. So what did anyone expect from the shady Senator from Chicago.

Veridico

May 9, 2009

As a Canadian, I was hoping that Dems would vote for somebody else other than Obama during the primaries as I envisaged at that time that an Obama's eventual presidential victory would lead America to financial ruin. I'm sorry that my prediction was right though I wish it was otherwise as I am a friend of the American people.
As for the anticipated eventual demise of Chrysler, it does not matter to the Union bosses because, you can bet your life, they will walk away with millions and ultra generous pensions and other perks leaving the truly needy workers holding the bags (empty ones, of course). That will work great and to Obama's liking, no doubt, since he's UAW's biggest benefactor.

Like many other commentators. I will only buy from american capitalist companies.... FORD and any non-UAW companies operating in the USA. A thugocracy has developed in the USA!! We are worse than socialists bc we have had no real historical mishap or trauma as China or Russia did. Be on notice: Whitehouse. I'm only buying true honest American-values made vehicles anymore. Not your petty imitations and lapdog company ones.

For is really looking good, like a true merican company. I would also say that any of the "transplant" manufacturers who aren't part of robbing taxpayers can take pride and expect support also. That's American, despite what may be their original country.

Chrysler,GM,and Ford were always owned by the UAW. The union had the power to make or break them. The big three would be better off calling themselves the United Auto Makers. Backed by the political clout of the UAW.

Obama and his "thug-Chicago politics" are destroying America, our economic system and every thing great about this country. The man is criminal, a fraud, a liar and a racit. He need to be impeached, he has violated our Constitution, engaged our enemies, opened our borders to terrorist and by executive order, provided $20.3 million to relocate Hamas to America. Do you think this is the act of a patriot? An American? I think not. We have the devil running this country, and the destructive path is frightening.

Our last three vehicles have been Chrysler products, and we still have two of them. When the day comes to replace them, it won't be anything from Obama/UAW Motors. I've owned Fords, Hondas, a VW and a Toyota, and that is where my $$$ will be heading.

All the people running out to buy Ford's because they don't have anything to do with the UAW, better wake up. Ford has plenty of UAW workers and UAW retirees (the people who have traded future benefits for part of a dead company). How many of you would like the deal that the retirees got?? What a joke. The republicans will never get back in power with their complete cluelessness on every single issue. Kiss Michigan goodbye forever in future elections, probably Ohio and Pennsylvania too.

Ratner never mentions the 1 billion dollars the UAW has in their strike fund. Where's that money go?

next

May 10, 2009

Obama said everyone must sacrafice, Chyrsler gives up 55% of their company to the UAW, the U.S. gov. gets to name 40% of board, bond holders and creditors get 29%, the UAW gives up 95% of regular earnings for not working when Chyrsler is forced to shutdown a plant, and they accept competitive wages based on transplants. For that the UAW gets another 4.6 billion from taxpayers and gets to appoint a UAW member to the board. Where is the justice when a strong arguement can be made that the UAW has at least 50% to blame in the demise of this company.

Why is it that when conservatives decry illegal governmental actions and point out Obama administration thuggery, it is called Hate?

I see anger at what is being done to the US Constitution. Hate does not equal anger.

Hate is what you hear out of nutty liberals like Garofalo and those who attach Miss California for having morals and a different opinion than liberals.

Lib's fall back on "Hate Speech" or " Your a Racist Speech" when they have no facts or logic. They wear their emotions on their sleeves and "feel" instead of thinking. Any one that doesn't agree with their feelings is a "Hater or Racist". It is the Democrat moonbat rule of; first isolate your target, then demean your target, then bury your target, personally.
