Growing public backlash over Obamacare

Examiner Editorial
November 27, 2009

(Andrew Harnik/Examiner)

Two-dozen Democrats from Republican-leaning districts, who voted for the House version of President Obama's increasingly unpopular health care reform, are beginning to feel a growing public backlash. ReversetheVote.org has already raised $123,105 that will be dedicated exclusively to defeating all 24, including Rep. Gerry Connolly, D-Va., in 2010 if they don't reject the final conference committee version of the bill. They "voted to take away your healthcare and put it in the hands of federal bureaucrats," the Web site says. "Democrats made a choice ... next fall, voters will make a choice."

They're not the only ones. Twenty-nine other House Democrats who voted for the bill come from districts that John McCain carried, making them particularly vulnerable to an angry electorate that never bought into the "hope and change" hype in the first place.

Democratic senators who are up for re-election next year in nine states face the same dilemma. As support erodes for Obamacare's massive tax increases and deep Medicare cuts, they must also consider the personal political cost. Only 38 percent of the public supports their health care plan, the lowest level of public support in more than two years. As more details of the 2,074-page behemoth -- which most members of Congress concede they have not read -- continue to trickle out, the more the poll numbers drop.

It's not hard to figure out why. Obamacare was supposed to lower costs, extend coverage and improve Americans' health care options. It does none of those things.

Despite accounting gimmicks, Obamacare will cost $4.9 trillion over the next 20 years. This enormous sum will suck the wind out of an already struggling economy. The plan includes higher premiums for younger workers, fines for those who refuse to purchase coverage, lower Medicare payments to doctors and hospitals, and job-killing taxes on employers.

Obamacare will also force an estimated five million workers to lose their employer-provided coverage.

Federal taxpayers will be forced to pay for elective abortions even though only 13 percent favor such coverage.

As far as improving health care options is concerned, the administration wants to cut down on mammograms and slash Medicare Advantage for seniors to save money. After all this spending and upheaval, 24 million Americans will remain uninsured in 2019. Every Democrat who ignores the public will and votes for this higher-cost, lower-care monstrosity will be held accountable. Voters back home won't let them forget it.

The Two-Dozen Democrats Realized That The Light They Saw Was Not The End Of The Tunnel,But An On-coming Train!!!

I'm Sure When Others "See The Light",They Too Will Turn And Run!!!

What would be the benefits of this? No, this is not true. What's wrong with you guys? Money and mental health walk together in steps, because when your income slows down it puts a strain on your mental health, which can make you a patient without money, leaving you in a situation that calls for two options: borrowing money or leaving your bills unpaid and going to collections.

This editorial is right on point. A camel is a horse designed by a committee and the health bill is the biggest, hungriest and most unproductive camel of all time. As our founding fathers would advise if they were here - let the states deal with health care. The federal government botches everything it touches no matter which party is in control. If our national debt were included in our tax burden we would be right up there among the highest taxed nations - but with little to show for all that money except growing welfare rolls, a collapsing dollar, a jobless economy and no hope of real recovery since all of the economic theories that still guide us have been shown in the real world to be bogus.

What the Democrats offer is not legitimate reform. Their bills lack the following items that would make for true midical reform, and would cut costs:
- Tort reform
- Remove insurance firms' antitrust exemption
- Allow nationwide competition
- Promote use of catastrophic-only coverage
- Promote doctor shopping (Why should I pay a doctor $100 for an amoxycillin prescription?)

What is the Federal Government, but a cookie monster that always seeks to be omnivorous; a mass of tie wearing zealots who always believe that process is the goal - an they have the inefficient piles of forms to prove it. Bureaucracy, in their mind, is the true democracy.

The reason that they want to start the tax 4 years before the coverage is that they want the money for other things. Then in 2014 WE will be stuck with the actual coverage starting and the Gov has no money to pay for it (does the Soc Sec lockbox ring a bell)

I cannot get my H1N1 or my standard influenza vaccinations because none have been supplied to my physician. Our Government is over two months late in it’s program to inoculate Americans against the H1N1 influenza. This FAILURE is standard for federal run programs.

We do not need nor want the proposed monstrous Federal health bill which will bankrupt our country.

Congress, just do your job and fix the existing broken and corrupt Medicare and Medicaid.

I would like to know who are being surveyed for these so call voters against Health Care reform, the only people against reform are Republicans who have the best Insurance Goverment can purchase and people who are so dumb and ignorant who beleive anything thats said about the President anyone with simple common sense and who have to pay for health insurance realize that the Insurance Industry have a monopoly, in some states a single monopoly in which they raise premiums every year to increase their profits, because they answer to no one nor do they have to give you the customer an explanation why? No competitions Until this bill pass which will benefits 95% of Americans the jerks, lobbyist and Obama haters will continue to spread mis-information and lies to advance their hatered for the President and to hell with the million of hard working Americans who continue to suffer due to the lack og affordable Health Insurance.

What we need is federal regulations of these companies NOT government run health care.
I have been a democrat for many years and I am completely against this plan! They want to force all the other insurance companies out of business because that's what will happen. Most of my friends are democrats with a few liberals and independents- besides the most far left leaning -they all are against this and plan to raise a storm if they pass this . it would be a shame because it will put the Republicans back in power which is pretty much the same s_ _ t

Well Big-k, the problem is this healthcare doesn't do any of the things it promises to do and we will still end up with like 10-15 million people without health insurance so what is the real benefit. Your the fool who believes everything he is told. Like this bill will cover all americans or it will be "deficit neutral", its bogus and only foolish liberals who thing like sheep would buy into it. Obama is a failure, I can't think of anything he's accomplished, but he's sure as hell ambarrassed this country a lot. He was suppose to clean up washington, it's as dirty as ever, he was supposed to fix who things work in washington, everythings broken. Hope, Change, BULLS#*%

removing them from office is not enough if all they care about is enacting their agenda at any cost. They need to be held accountable for this treasonous power grab attempt. Remove their pensions, tax them for the entire amount they made interest, during their term where they gave the American people the middle finger!!! The problem is, with the census including illegal aliens, plus the imminent Amnesty for illegals... we may not get another election.

America does have a health care problem. Unfortunately, in addressing it, the Dems have decided to do so Chicago-style, and turn health care reform in a sort of spoils system politics in which their legislation completely ignores the losing sides' input, and they use it to pay off their special interests. As a result, the Dems are creating as many or more problems than their bill actually solves.

You still have to consider that the people want Obamacare or at least are willing to give it a chance.

The dissent for a government controlled lifestyle would be welcome and is currently being lived by those that live on welfare and other social services so to them it would just be an added benefit.

If the government that we have wants a mobstyle controlled country then they should be prepared for what's to come. If the politicians aren't going to respect the constitution and force things upon the people then the people can simply cut the cash flow from their paychecks to the politicians.

They can go after a few people but they can't go after millions. Once the many stop funding this illegitimate regime they will have to change course on destroying this once great country.

Stop ObamaCare NOW! I am 70 years old with a heart condition and want to die on my own, not because some stupid, self serving Democrate wants to save a buck for ObamaCare by denying service. If this is such a good plan why did Congress exempt themselves from it at the onset? Just like the old USSR, everyone was equil just some were more equil than others and were more deserving but all were equilly miserable. That turned out great didn't it? Obama, Pelosi, Reid...Kiss my grits and go to hell with your wonderful healthcare plan!!! America, when is enough, enough from these crazy ba$tard$???

This is all a shell game. Does anyone remember Robert Mugabe, or Idi Amin Dada, or Mobutu? They all seized power by declaring crises and imposing themselves as rulers-for-life. That is clearly Obamination's intention, with the aid of our vast "useful idiot" population. Health care my tukas! Obama wouldn't blink if this nation of "infidels" died by the millions! He never intends to need to run for election again, having learned from the Masters in Africa how it's done. Corruption is a cottage industry in his native land (Kenya) and Chicago was just his internship. Wake up people! When the morning starts with "Allahu-Akhbar" on the radio, it will be too late!

I read this;"How about the 39% of seniors who don't have access to meals on wheels?" Maybe they have loving families who help them or maybe they help themselves. Or friends. Or church outreach programs. Or the occasional Boy Scout? Looking to the government to solve every situation is not really a good way to do things. Except maybe in Cuba or the former USSR. Not here. If you want to help someone, that's great. But forcing people to give up their financial security to give the government more money to supposedly help folks does not work. 8 trillion spent since the war on Poverty began. result: the same percentage of poor people. Nothing for the money but more federal control.

My belief is your taxdollars will be used to buy a comfortable retirement for thise democrats in marginal districts who vote for the bill. That is why when conservatives take over they need to use the IRS (like the dmocrats do) and audit all their financial accounts to see how much money has been given them and where it came from....

Those Democrats who voted for health care "reform", particularly those in moderate to conservative leaning Congressional Districts seem to be committing political hara kiri. I have always been under the assumption that politicians want to be loved and, of course, re-elected. Voting for this bill is in many of these vulnerable Districts is the equivalent of taking early retirement. Go figure.

Big-K's stereotyping of opponents of the Democratic Party proposals is obnoxious. I'm a libertarian who stopped supporting the Republicans when Reagan brought in the religious right, and who voted for Obama last fall, as the lesser evil. I don't have health insurance at all; I'm self-employed, without employee benefits, and I can't afford what it costs. I will still be uninsured if the Democratic proposals pass, because they do nothing to make health insurance more affordable; but I'll be paying an annual fine of hundreds of dollars to punish me for not buying something I can't pay for. I hope and believe that reliance on actual market competition, along the lines suggested by JRToday, would make health insurance affordable for me; but I would favor market-based reforms even if not, because I regard compulsion as ethically objectionable. If Congress doesn't back down on this issue, they deserve to be voted out of office.

Andy Stern of the SEIU goes to the White House 22 times in Obama's first 6 months. Why? Not Card Check. Healthcare is the top issue for the SEIU. They will be right in the middle of writing this legislation. 1999 they were able to secure huge pension giveaways in California from Gray Davis.

The SEIU MUST be stopped. They are the darkness that is greasing this process w/ money and influence. They are robbing future taxpayers

"Democratic senators who are up for re-election next year in nine states face the same dilemma. As support erodes for Obamacare's massive tax increases and deep Medicare cuts, they must also consider the personal political cost."

Personal political cost? What happened to worrying about what their constituents want? Why is the default position worrying about being re-elected? That's the most serious problem in all of this: we've developed a permanent poliical class that thinks of the people as their servants rather than their employers.

Until there is a free market in health care, un-encumbered by the heavy hand of government misallocation of resources and meddling, health care will either be A) expensive or B) rationed. The market isn't perfect: it won't solve every problem immediately. But it will allocate resources efficiently by coordinating the purchasing decisions of individuals through the price system. Until our nation understands and accepts the basics of a free market system, we will continue to be plagued by chronic socialism. Educate your children so their generation can save itself from the mess ours has created.

AARP endorsed the health care bill to improve its internal corporate profitability, even though it decimates its membership health care. In all my 73 years of life, I have never seen such an arrogant and criminal administration as we now have. I hope those who voted for change like the change they got.

Why can't our government use some common sense?
1) Tort Reform
2) Health Insurance available across states
3) Guaranteed insurance regardless of pre-existing conditions
4) Keep insurance when changing jobs
5) Insure the 3.3 billion people that can't afford it.
Why take over 1/6th of our economy and hurt 85% of the Americans that like their insurance? The only reason is Socialism/Communism to destroy America!

Hurry 2010 and 2012, don't fall for this fake reform America! God Bless America!
