Lindsey Graham's costly collegiality

Examiner Editorial
October 14, 2009

Periodically, a Republican senator is seized with desire to be the front man for the Democrats' latest regulatory monstrosity in Washington. Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina is now in the throes of this pathological urge, which usually appears just when defeat seems imminent for a big-government scheme like the Waxman-Markey cap-and-trade energy bill. Democrats and their liberal buddies in the mainstream media need only whisper the magic word "bipartisanship" and soon enough along comes a gullible GOPer to take the bait.

Graham made clear in a Sunday New York Times op-ed written with Sen. John Kerry, D-MA, that he will support cap-and-trade if Democrats agree to expand nuclear power and off-shore oil and natural gas development. Kerry is the Senate point man in the Democrats' campaign to pass a Senate version of the 1,400-plus page Waxman-Markey bill approved earlier this year by the House. Graham's approach sounds like a reasonable "let's just split the difference" compromise. The problem is that no matter what Kerry and the Democrats agree to now in order to sucker Graham and similarly na?ve Republicans, environmental activists and sympathetic federal bureaucrats will file endless legal and administrative challenges to stall and ultimately veto more nuclear power production or development of America's bountiful off-shore energy supplies. Meanwhile, the Democrats' cap-and-trade bill will almost immediately begin inflicting devastating economic consequences that will be with us for decades.

Here's why: The U.S. economy depends on carbon-based fuels, which account for 85 percent of the energy we use. That won't change anytime soon, no matter how many billions of tax dollars Congress and President Obama spend on alternative energy development. Cap-and-trade establishes a $700 billion government-run "market" for business to buy and sell a steadily declining number of permits for creating carbon emissions. Confusing? Imagine a steadily tightening choke-hold on your windpipe and you've got what cap-and-trade will do to America's economy.

Forcing the private economy to use less conventional energy while waiting for the government-subsidized alternative energy sources to come online will cost millions of jobs and send energy prices skyrocketing as corporations pass along to consumers the $700 billion of for those permits. As a result, according to the Center for Data Analysis at the Heritage Foundation, gas prices at the pump will increase 58 percent, or $1.38 per gallon. Residential electricity costs will zoom up by 90 percent. Nearly 1.9 million jobs will be lost by 2012 overall, and the economy will lose nearly $10 trillion in gross domestic product by 2035. But no worry, Lindsay Graham will still be hailed as a bipartisan kind of guy.

At least it's a campaign promise by Obama that will be kept - that our energy costs will go up 80%. . . .

The last 2 paragraphs of this "editorial" are so filled with propaganda and conjecture masquerading as "facts" that it's laughable. What a joke?
If you actually read the "analysis" much of this is based on, the author finally comes to the conclusion that, much to his dismay, if the U.S. and other countries actually put in place these rules the results would be significant.
This is just another example of someone trying to twist the facts to prop up their unsupportable opinion.

Good for Sen. Lindsay Graham! At least he has shown that South Carolina can produce politicians who are not jerks like Sen. Jim DeMint, Rep. Joe Wilson, Gov. Mark Sanford and the late Sen. Strom Thurmond. Imagine that, a Republican senator with common sense and concern for our environmental crisis!

Lindsay Graham has always been a tool. Sometimes mor so than others.

Health care is not about health.

Cap and trade is not about pollution, else there would be no "trade."

IT'S ALL ABOUT REDISTRIBUTION OF WEALTH.

Mr. Graham and Ms. Snowe have sold out the American people and the Constitution they swore to uphold. The are both unfit to hold office.

Alas, Even the paragon of correct thinking, the BBC has gone into the tank. They are admitting that the warmest year on record was 1998, and that the globe is probably in the midst of a three decade (that is thirty years for the residents of Rio Linda) cooling period. They did not care to conjecture about the rest of the century, probably because their last prognostication went so well. Global warning was the personal Ponzi scheme of Al Gore, who apparently is raking it in to the tune of over 100 million a year. Quite a tune!!! This Ponzi schoeme outdoes Mr Madoff in spades. He only stole money. Mr. Gore is respsonsible for all the job and trade loss this country will suffer becasue of its absolutely wrong-headed, inane energy policies. I am still waiting to see a submarine that can operate on solar or wind power. Good luck on that one.

We need more ideological militants in the conservative/libertarian movement.

This country will not survive the one sided 'bipartisanship' we're having to endure.

If they are going to act like democrats, let them run as democrats. It is just two more that need to be voted out. I would rather have a truthful Democrat " if there is such a thing" than a lying Republican. When they were impeaching Clinton he was BMOC in my book now he is just mudd with snowe on it.

twolaneflash is right that Lindsey is a flagrant poofter. Which is fine. He should man up about it I think though. It doesn't help that he rolls over for Meghan's pompous codger daddy like a pitiful little poodle dog.

While I admire and respect Senator Graham's commitment to this issue and believe wholeheartedly that we must do something soon to stem the tide of global climate change, I hope that he and his colleagues take a serious look at the alternatives to the watered down and ineffective cap and trade system on which they’ve based both the House and Senate versions of the bill. A carbon tax shift approach would benefit the environment measurably more than cap and trade, incentivize green R&D AND return the revenue to the people.

When Graham's up for re-election, don't count on his winning. People in SC, both Republicans and Dems are pi$$ed with him.

Foolishly gullible is more like it. Graham also voted to confirm Eric Holder as AG. Despite having a track record of politicizing legal issues, Graham believed in Holder's faux-sincerity that all of that was behind him. We’ve seen how that turned out and Graham owes a public apology for that vote. At least you can’t call Graham a slow learner. You can chart a slow learner’s progress

Graham was the same RINO before the most recent election and my fellow republican
South Carolinians voted for him over a real conservative candidate in the primary. As much as I'd like to see him as "Former Senator Graham", I'm not sure he won't win next time he runs unless Obama appoints him ambassador to Somewhereistan or Cap 'n Trade Czar.

On behalf of all the good, conservative people of South Carolina, allow me to apologize to the rest of the country for the actions of Senator Graham. He certainly does not represent the feelings of most of the people, and he knows it...he just doesn't care.
