Meaty earmarks for Harkin

By: The Daily Outrage for 010809

January 8, 2009

WHO: Sen. Tom Harkin, D-IA

WHAT: Harkin arranged an earmark of nearly $8 million that made possible construction of a special sewage treatment plant serving Agriprocessors, a controversial meat-packing plant in Postville, Iowa, that was the subject of a massive immigration raid last year.

WHY IT’S AN OUTRAGE: The program Harkin used for the earmark is intended to help small towns cope with sewage problems, a fact that would have disqualified Agriprocessors from eligibility for the funds. The new plant doesn’t serve Postville residents.

WHERE TO VENT: Call Sen. Tom Harkin at 202-224-3254

You left out the worst part. The sewage plant only serves the processing company, but the city had to guarantee the loan. Now the agriprocessor has gone bankrupt and the city is stuck with the loan payments.

http://www.jewcy.com/tags/agriprocessors ICE’s May 12 immigration raid at Agriprocessors, then the largest single site immigration raid in US history. On the day of the raid, about 75% of Agriprocessors’ workforce was illegal. ICE agents found stacks of blank Green Cards in Agriprocessors’ HR office, along with forged Green Cards and other fraudulent documents

This is old news. That earmark was in FY 2006, before the company was even in the news for the ICE raid.

Palin's Pork Earmarks for Alaska

Jan 9, 2009

WHO: Sarah Palin WHAT: Last year Palin submitted to Congress a list of Alaska projects worth $197.8 million, including $2 million to research crab productivity in the Bering Sea. WHY AN OUTRAGE: Because she lied about her enthusiastic support for earmarks including the bridge to nowhere. She flip-flopped on that after she became a candidate for VP. WHERE TO VENT: 907-465-3500, Alaska Governor's Office
